Phil Simmons is no stranger to the international cricket scene, having coached West Indies to the 2016 T20 World Cup title. His latest stint with PNG comes after his second tenure as West Indies coach ended following their group-stage elimination at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Phil Simmons has an extensive background in franchise cricket, having coached Trinbago Knight Riders, LA Knight Riders, and Karachi Kings. He has been recruited by Cricket PNG to support head coach Tatenda Taibu, a former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper. According to Simmons, his role will involve sharing his experience of playing in World Cups and local conditions, particularly in the Caribbean.
PNG is set to participate in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will take place in June. The team arrived in St Kitts last week and has been training and playing unofficial warm-up matches. They will face Oman and Namibia in official warm-up fixtures in Trinidad and Tobago next week. PNG has been drawn in Group C of the tournament and will face co-hosts West Indies in their opening match on June 2.
