The Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has lodged an official complaint with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over a scoring error that may have cost its team victory against Uttarakhand in the pre-quarter-final of the Women’s Under-19 T20 Championship in Nagpur.

The controversial incident occurred during Jharkhand’s run chase of 135, with the team needing just eight runs from the final over. A failure to record a completed run correctly left Jharkhand chasing a higher target than the actual match situation required. The team eventually lost by one run, bringing its campaign to a disappointing end.

The incident has raised concerns about the accuracy of official scoring, particularly in high-pressure knockout matches where a single run can determine the outcome.

How the Scoring Error Changed the Match

Jharkhand began the final over at 127/7, requiring eight runs from six deliveries to secure victory. The batters collected three runs from the first three balls, reducing the requirement to five from three deliveries.

The crucial moment came on the fourth delivery when Lakshmi Kumari was run out while attempting a second run. Jharkhand had already completed one run before the dismissal, but the official scorers recorded the run-out without adding the completed run to the team’s total.

As a result, the official scoreboard showed Jharkhand needing five runs from the final two deliveries, although the correct requirement should have been four.

The error became even more significant when Uttarakhand bowled a wide on the next delivery. The official equation then showed Jharkhand needing four runs from two balls.

Another run-out followed as the batters attempted a second run, leaving Jharkhand with three runs required from the final delivery and only one wicket remaining, according to the scoreboard.

However, had the earlier completed run been recorded correctly, Jharkhand would have needed only two runs from the final ball.

Final-Ball Run-Out Seals Controversial Defeat

Jharkhand failed to complete the chase on the final delivery, with another run-out occurring as the batters attempted a second run. The team was credited with one run, and the official result recorded a one-run victory for Uttarakhand.

The scoring error proved decisive in the final outcome. Correctly recording the completed run on the fourth delivery would have left the teams level rather than giving Uttarakhand victory by a single run.

The incident has prompted JSCA to seek an investigation into the matter. The association believes the mistake significantly affected the match situation and deserves formal scrutiny.

For Jharkhand, the defeat was especially painful because the team was competing in the knockout stages of the Women’s Under-19 Elite competition for the first time.

Jharkhand Coach Calls for Investigation

Jharkhand head coach Jaskaran Singh expressed disappointment over the result, emphasising the importance of knockout opportunities for young cricketers.

He explained that the team reviewed video footage of the final over before submitting its complaint and believed the scoring mistake was clearly visible.

According to Singh, the team immediately brought the issue to the attention of match referee Anupa Narvekar following the presentation ceremony.

The coach also highlighted the significance of the tournament for the players, particularly because it represented Jharkhand’s first qualification for the knockout stages of the competition.

He hoped the BCCI would examine the incident and take appropriate steps to prevent similar errors in future matches.

Singh further suggested that the consequences might have been different in a league-stage fixture, underlining the additional pressure and importance attached to knockout games.

BCCI Complaint Puts Official Scoring Under Scrutiny

The complaint places the focus on the accuracy of match scoring and the procedures used to address potential errors during a game.

In close cricket matches, official scorers play a crucial role in ensuring that every completed run, extra and dismissal is recorded correctly. Even a minor mistake can alter the required target and influence the decisions made by players during the closing stages.

In Jharkhand’s case, the disputed run occurred during the final over of a knockout match, making the potential consequences particularly significant.

The association’s complaint seeks to ensure that the incident is examined and that lessons are learned for future competitions. Any further action will depend on the BCCI’s review of the matter.

A Disappointing End to Jharkhand’s Campaign

Jharkhand’s first appearance in the Women’s Under-19 Elite knockout stages had represented an important achievement for the team. The narrow defeat against Uttarakhand, however, ended that campaign amid controversy.

While the players were unable to complete the chase, the disputed scoring decision has raised questions about whether the match’s final equation accurately reflected the runs scored.

The case now highlights the importance of reliable scoring procedures and prompt correction of errors, particularly in decisive moments.

JSCA’s complaint to the BCCI seeks clarity on an incident in which one incorrectly recorded run may have changed the outcome of a knockout match. The response to the complaint could prove important in determining how similar scoring disputes are handled in future domestic cricket competitions.
