Mumbai Indians (MI) have continued their coaching overhaul ahead of IPL 2027, parting ways with bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, along with fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. The latest changes come days after the franchise moved on from head coach Mahela Jayawardene and appointed former MI allrounder Kieron Pollard as his successor.

Former India fielding coach T Dilip is expected to join Mumbai Indians in the same capacity as the franchise reshapes its support staff for the upcoming season.

The departures mark a significant transition for the five-time IPL champions, who are preparing to enter a new phase under Pollard’s leadership.

Lasith Malinga’s Long Association with Mumbai Indians Ends

Malinga has been one of the most influential figures in Mumbai Indians’ history, both as a player and a coach. The Sri Lankan fast-bowling legend played a crucial role in the franchise’s success, helping MI win four IPL titles and the Champions League T20 trophy in 2011.

After his playing career, Malinga returned to the franchise as a mentor and coach, continuing to contribute to its bowling department. His understanding of T20 cricket and experience in high-pressure situations made him an important part of Mumbai’s coaching structure.

In its statement, Mumbai Indians praised Malinga’s passion, competitive spirit and commitment, acknowledging his contribution to the team’s achievements and the development of its players.

The franchise also described his journey as a special one, highlighting the lasting legacy he leaves behind. Although his coaching association with MI has now ended, Malinga’s role in establishing the franchise as one of the IPL’s most successful teams remains significant.

Paras Mhambrey Departs After Two Recent Seasons

Paras Mhambrey is another prominent name leaving Mumbai Indians’ coaching setup. He rejoined the franchise in 2024 after being part of India’s coaching staff during their T20 World Cup triumph that year.

Mhambrey served as MI’s bowling coach for the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons. He was also associated with MI Emirates, the franchise’s team in the International League T20.

However, his connection with Mumbai Indians goes back much further. He was part of the support staff during the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and subsequently enjoyed an extended spell with the franchise from 2010 to 2017.

During that period, Mumbai Indians won their maiden IPL title in 2013 and secured Champions League T20 trophies in 2011 and 2013.

The franchise acknowledged Mhambrey’s experience, dedication and understanding of MI’s culture. It also appreciated his contribution to developing bowling talent and building strong relationships within the team.

His departure represents another major change in a coaching department that has played an important role in Mumbai’s success over the years.

Carl Hopkinson Also Leaves the Coaching Staff

Fielding coach Carl Hopkinson has also parted ways with Mumbai Indians. He joined the franchise ahead of the 2025 IPL season, replacing James Pamment.

Before moving to the IPL, Hopkinson served as the England men’s team’s lead fielding coach from 2018 to 2024. During his tenure, England won the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

His experience at the international level brought valuable expertise to Mumbai Indians’ fielding department. However, the franchise has now decided to make a change in that role, with former India fielding coach T Dilip expected to take over.

Dilip’s anticipated appointment would add another experienced coach to Mumbai’s revamped setup as the team prepares for the next IPL campaign.

Kieron Pollard Leads Mumbai Indians’ New Era

The coaching changes follow the appointment of Kieron Pollard as Mumbai Indians’ head coach for IPL 2027. Pollard, who enjoyed an illustrious playing career with the franchise, now faces the challenge of guiding the team from the dugout.

His appointment signals a shift towards a familiar figure who understands the expectations, culture and competitive environment of Mumbai Indians.

With Malinga, Mhambrey and Hopkinson departing, Pollard and the franchise management will need to establish a new coaching structure while maintaining continuity in areas where it remains valuable.

The changes also underline MI’s intention to reassess its approach after recent challenges and build a squad capable of competing for another IPL title.

Mumbai Indians Prepare for IPL 2027

Mumbai Indians have won five IPL championships, but their latest coaching changes suggest that the franchise is preparing for a fresh start ahead of the 2027 season.

The immediate focus will be on finalising the support staff and assessing the squad before the December mini-auction. The new coaching group will then have to identify areas requiring improvement and prepare a balanced team for the campaign.

Malinga’s departure is particularly notable given his long-standing association with the franchise, while Mhambrey and Hopkinson also bring substantial coaching experience from domestic and international cricket.

With Pollard now in charge and T Dilip expected to join as fielding coach, Mumbai Indians are moving towards a substantially revamped setup. Whether these changes translate into improved performances will become clearer when the team begins its IPL 2027 campaign.
