Kolkata Knight Riders has appointed Nitish Rana as the acting captain of the team for IPL 2023. Nitish has the experience of captaining at the domestic level. Due to the injury of Shreyas Iyer, the KKR team had to take this decision. It is believed that Iyer will miss at least the first half of the league due to injury.

Nitish became the new captain of KKR

Caribbean spin bowler Sunil Narine was named in the race as a captaincy contender along with Nitish Rana. However, finally the Kolkata team has shown faith in the Indian batsman. Nitish has been with KKR since the year 2018 and has led the team to memorable victories in many matches.

Nitish has played 91 matches in the Indian Premier League so far and during this time he has scored 2,181 runs at a strong strike rate of 134. Nitish has captained Delhi in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament and under his leadership the team won 8 out of 12 T20I matches.

Shreyas Iyer will take time to recover

Shreyas Iyer, the regular captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, is suffering from a back problem and is expected to undergo surgery. However, Iyer has decided not to undergo surgery as of now.

In its statement released by KKR, it is expected that Iyer will be able to play some matches in the tournament after recovering. Iyer’s absence is a big blow for KKR unit.

Punjab will compete in the first match

The team of Kolkata Knight Riders has to face Punjab Kings in their first match of IPL 2023 on 1st April. The team’s performance last season was disappointing and under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the team ended the tournament at the seventh position. The team was able to win 6 out of 14 matches played in the tournament, while in 8 the team had to face defeat.
