India are expected to kick off their upcoming Test tour of Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium, with the opening match likely to be played from August 15 to 19. The two-match series will form part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and mark India’s first Test visit to Sri Lanka since 2017.
Although the full itinerary is yet to receive official confirmation from the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), preparations are understood to be underway, with Galle emerging as the preferred venue for the series opener.
First Test Likely in Galle
Known for its spin-friendly conditions and picturesque setting, the Galle International Stadium has hosted several memorable Test matches over the years. The venue is expected to welcome Shubman Gill’s India side for the first Test, offering another stern challenge for the visitors in subcontinental conditions.
India last played a Test series in Sri Lanka nine years ago under the leadership of Virat Kohli. On that occasion, India dominated proceedings and completed a comprehensive 3-0 series whitewash.
This time, Gill will be aiming to continue India’s strong record in Sri Lanka while securing valuable World Test Championship points.
Colombo Expected to Host Second Test
The second and final Test is likely to be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground in Colombo, beginning on August 23. While the venue has not been officially finalized, it remains the frontrunner to host the match.
The SSC Ground is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic cricket venues and has traditionally hosted several high-profile international fixtures.
A two-Test series may appear short, but every match carries significant importance in the World Test Championship standings, making the contest crucial for both teams.
T20I Series Also Under Discussion
Apart from the Test matches, discussions are ongoing regarding the inclusion of a three-match T20I series during India’s tour.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently confirmed that a request for three T20 internationals had been received and that the schedule would be finalized soon.
The addition of T20Is would provide fans with a complete multi-format tour while offering both teams valuable preparation ahead of future white-ball assignments.
Lanka Premier League Influencing Schedule
One of the factors influencing the tour schedule is the Lanka Premier League (LPL), which is scheduled to conclude on August 9.
Given the timing, it appears more practical for the proposed T20I series to be played after the Test matches rather than before them. This arrangement would allow players participating in the LPL to complete their franchise commitments before joining the national setup.
Sri Lanka Cricket is reportedly working through the logistical details and evaluating the most suitable window for the white-ball leg of the tour.

Important WTC Assignment for India
The Sri Lanka tour represents another important chapter in India’s World Test Championship campaign. Under new captain Shubman Gill, the team will be eager to build momentum and strengthen its position in the WTC standings.
With experienced campaigners and emerging talents expected to form the squad, the series will also provide an opportunity to assess India’s depth in challenging overseas conditions.
For Sri Lanka, home advantage and familiarity with spin-friendly surfaces could prove decisive, setting the stage for a competitive contest between two strong Asian rivals.
Awaiting Official Confirmation
While official confirmation from the respective cricket boards is still awaited, all indications suggest that Galle will host the opening Test from August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23.
If the proposed T20I series is approved, the tour could become one of the most significant bilateral assignments in the second half of the year, offering fans exciting cricket across both red-ball and white-ball formats.
As India prepare for their first Test series in Sri Lanka in nearly a decade, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a crucial and closely watched contest.
