JOSEPH

West Indies have opted to rest fast bowler Alzarri Joseph for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka as part of a workload management strategy. Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that the pacer has been given a break to ensure he remains fresh for the two-match Test series against the same opposition later this month.

The decision highlights the team’s focus on managing key players carefully as they balance commitments across formats.

Fresh Faces Return to the Squad

The T20I series marks West Indies’ first assignment since their impressive campaign at the 2026 T20 World Cup, where they remained in contention for a semifinal spot until the closing stages of the tournament.

Selectors have made three changes to that World Cup squad, bringing in Ackeem Auguste, Jewel Andrew and Shamar Springer. The trio replace Johnson Charles, Quentin Sampson and Jayden Seales.

All three incoming players have previous international T20 experience and will be eager to make a strong impression as West Indies continue building towards future global tournaments.

Shamar Joseph Set for Return

Fast bowler Shamar Joseph is expected to rejoin the squad after leaving the team before the third ODI against Sri Lanka. His return will provide an additional boost to the bowling attack as the hosts aim to start the T20 series on a positive note.

The ODI leg of the tour ended with Sri Lanka winning the series 1-0 after the second and third matches were washed out due to rain.

Daren Sammy Focused on Building Momentum

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum generated during the T20 World Cup.

“This series is important for us because it is our first T20 assignment since the World Cup. The team showed tremendous passion, fight and unity, and we want to continue building on those foundations,” Sammy said.

The former captain added that the objective is to keep improving as a unit while delivering performances that make West Indies supporters proud.

Jamaica to Host the Series

All three T20 internationals will be played at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The matches are scheduled for June 11, June 13 and June 14, providing both teams with a quick turnaround after the ODI series.

Led by captain Shai Hope, West Indies will look to capitalize on home conditions and begin the new T20 cycle with a strong showing against Sri Lanka.
