On the day of Diwali ,India crushed Australia in the 1987 World Cup which was played in India. In the 15th match of the Reliance ODI world cup 1987 was played at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium between India and Australia on the day of Diwali.

India post da mama total of 289 with the loss of 6 wickets. Sunil Gavaskar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mohammad Azharuddin and Dilip Vengsarkar scored half century each. Mohammad Azharuddin and off break bowling Maninder Singh took 3 wicket each to derail the Australian innings. Australia got all out for 233 runs and the Indian team won the match by 56 runs. The victory led to the widespread celebration across the country on the auspicious day of Diwali.

India clean sweep England 

In 2011, on the Diwali evening, the Indian fans had an extra reason to celebrate as the Indian team under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni completed a whitewash of England. In the last match of the series India poster total of 271 with the loss of 8 wickets courtesy MS Dhoni 75 unbeaten. Match was played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the second innings Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took 7 wickets between them.

India against Sri Lanka in 2005

The two Asian giants faced each other at the Swai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur in 2005 on the day of Diwali.  This was the third game of the series and India was leading the series by 2-0.

Sri Lankan team got to a flying start and put up are you total of 298 for the loss of four wickets in 50 overs. Kumar Sangakkara scored 138 and Mahela Jayawardene 71 crucial runs.

The Inning the Marked the arrival of MS Dhoni into the ‘Stage of Greatness’

In reply India lost Sachin Tendulkar at the start of the innings and the young blood MS Dhoni workout at Number 3 for India ahead of Rahul Dravid. MS Dhoni score 183 not out in just 15 balls with 10 sixes and 15 fours. This innings helped Indian team to achieve the target with 23 balls remaining.  This victory on diwali became memorable for the Indian cricket fans.

Hero Cup semi final vs South Africa

Indian team were against the Proteas in the 1993 Hero Cup semi final match at the Eden Gardens,  Kolkata.  India got off to a horrible start. The Indian team were bowled out for mere 195 runs. Captain Azhar scoring 90 alongside Praveen Amre with 48 runs.

The miracle happened on the field and Indian team effected three run outs . The match became balanced with South Africa needed 13 in just two overs. The well set David Richardson was run out in the 49th over of the inning and the team required 6 in the final over.

Sachin Tendulkar was given responsibility to bowl the final over. He gave a single on the initial bowl of the over and bowled three consecutive dot balls. The Proteas were unable to score the boundary off the final bowl and team India won the match by 3 runs. The 1993 diwali will always be remembered for the Sachin’s heroic efforts with the ball.
