BAHUTULE

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially appointed Sairaj Bahutule as the spin bowling coach of the India national cricket team, strengthening the coaching setup with one of the country’s most experienced spin mentors.

The appointment, which had been widely anticipated in recent weeks, was confirmed by the BCCI on June 2. Bahutule replaces the role on a full-time basis after years of contributing to Indian cricket across domestic, age-group and national-team structures.

Reward for Years of Coaching Excellence

In its official statement, the BCCI highlighted Bahutule’s extensive experience as both a player and coach, describing him as someone who has consistently helped develop spin-bowling talent across various levels of the game.

While his international playing career was relatively brief, Bahutule built a formidable reputation in domestic cricket and later established himself as one of India’s most respected coaching figures.

The board believes his experience working with young cricketers, domestic teams and IPL franchises makes him ideally suited to guide India’s next generation of spin bowlers.

A Distinguished Playing Career

Bahutule represented India in:

  • Two Test matches
  • Eight One-Day Internationals

However, it was in first-class cricket where he truly left a lasting mark.

Over a remarkable domestic career spanning nearly two decades and 188 first-class matches, Bahutule claimed:

  • 630 wickets
  • 6,176 runs

Those numbers place him among the most successful all-round performers in Indian domestic cricket history.

His ability to contribute significantly with both bat and ball made him a highly valuable player for many years and earned widespread respect within Indian cricket circles.

Successful Transition Into Coaching

Following retirement, Bahutule moved seamlessly into coaching and steadily built an impressive résumé.

He has served as head coach for several domestic teams, including:

  • Vidarbha cricket team
  • Kerala cricket team
  • Gujarat cricket team
  • Bengal cricket team

His coaching philosophy and ability to nurture spin talent earned praise throughout the domestic circuit.

Beyond state cricket, Bahutule also worked in the IPL, serving as spin-bowling coach with:

  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Punjab Kings

These experiences exposed him to elite-level international players and modern T20 coaching methods.

Key Role in India’s Youth Development

One of Bahutule’s most significant achievements came at the youth level.

He was part of the coaching staff that guided ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2022-winning India Under-19 team.

The success of that squad reinforced his reputation as a coach capable of developing young talent and preparing players for higher levels of competition.

He also remained involved with the Indian Under-19 setup during the 2024 World Cup cycle, continuing his contribution to the country’s talent pipeline.

Many of India’s emerging spin bowlers have worked directly under his guidance during their formative years.

Experience with India A and Senior Team

Bahutule is not entirely new to the senior Indian setup.

Over the past few years, he has worked with:

  • India A teams
  • Emerging player programmes
  • Senior national team assignments

He has frequently served as a specialist spin-bowling consultant on overseas tours and training camps.

This familiarity with the current player pool should help ensure a smooth transition into his new role.

Important Work at the Centre of Excellence

Another major factor behind his appointment is his extensive work at India’s premier cricket development facility.

Between 2021 and 2024, Bahutule was a member of the coaching staff at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy, now known as the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

During that period, he worked closely with:

  • Injured players undergoing rehabilitation
  • Emerging domestic cricketers
  • India A prospects
  • Future national team candidates

His involvement provided valuable insight into India’s long-term talent development strategy.

Bahutule Reacts to Appointment

Speaking after the announcement, Bahutule expressed pride at receiving the opportunity to return to the national team environment.

The former spinner described the role as a tremendous honour and said representing India as a player had been one of the greatest achievements of his career.

He added that contributing to Indian cricket again in a coaching capacity carried special significance and expressed excitement about working with the current generation of players across formats.

What His Appointment Means for India

India continue to possess one of the strongest spin-bowling ecosystems in world cricket.

With established names such as Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and several emerging talents pushing for opportunities, the role of a dedicated spin-bowling coach has become increasingly important.

Bahutule’s appointment signals the BCCI’s commitment to maintaining India’s traditional strength in spin bowling while ensuring young bowlers receive specialised technical guidance.

His combination of domestic expertise, developmental coaching experience and familiarity with modern cricket environments makes him a strong addition to India’s coaching staff.

As India prepare for a packed international calendar across formats, Bahutule will now be tasked with helping the country’s spinners continue their rich legacy and adapt to the evolving demands of international cricket.
