Tim David‘s successful IPL 2026 campaign has ended on a sour note after the Indian Premier League imposed a suspension on the powerful batter following a breach of the tournament’s Code of Conduct during the final.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder has been fined 50 percent of his match fee and awarded two demerit points for an incident involving umpire Nitin Menon during RCB’s IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans.
The latest offence takes David’s total tally to five demerit points for the season, triggering an automatic one-match suspension that will be carried forward to IPL 2027.
What Happened During the Final?
The incident occurred during the 10th over of Gujarat Titans’ innings in the IPL final.
According to the IPL’s disciplinary findings, David threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon while play was in progress.
Match officials subsequently reviewed the incident and determined that the act violated the league’s Code of Conduct.
Although the object involved was not a cricket ball, the IPL’s regulations cover all forms of equipment and other items that may be thrown in an inappropriate or potentially dangerous manner during a match.
The league considered the action serious enough to warrant both a financial penalty and additional demerit points.
Breach of Article 2.9
David was found guilty of violating Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
The regulation relates to:
Throwing a ball or any other item of cricket equipment at or near a player, official, umpire, match referee or any third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match.
The IPL’s disciplinary framework treats such behaviour seriously because it concerns the safety of players and match officials.
While the incident did not result in any injury, the act itself was deemed unacceptable under league regulations.
Third Offence of the Season
The punishment was particularly significant because it was not David’s first disciplinary issue during IPL 2026.
This latest breach was his third Level 1 offence of the season.
His disciplinary record includes:
- Match 20 – One demerit point
- Match 54 – Two demerit points
- IPL Final – Two demerit points
The cumulative total of five demerit points automatically activates a suspension under the IPL’s disciplinary system.
Repeated offences are treated more severely than isolated incidents, with penalties escalating as players accumulate additional demerit points.
One-Match Ban Confirmed
As a result of reaching the five-point threshold, David will miss the opening match of the next IPL season.
Whether he remains with Royal Challengers Bengaluru or joins another franchise before IPL 2027, the suspension will apply to the first match he is eligible to play.
The ban means David’s next IPL appearance will be delayed regardless of future auction or retention decisions.
