“IPL 2021 to have 8 teams and IPL 2022 to have 10 teams” – Reports

There have been a lot of rumours circulating regarding a realistic possibility of there being 2 new teams. There were talks about having an IPL with 10 teams. It has now been learnt that The BCCI general body on Thursday approved 10-team Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2022 edition at its 89th Annual General Meeting in Ahmedabad. The inclusion of two new teams couldn’t be done in time for IPL 14 considering there is little time for tenders to be floated for new teams. BCCI decided to back ICC’s bid for cricket’s inclusion in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after some clarifications from International Olympic Committee (IOC), said a source to PTI.

“14th edition of IPL will be held in April 2021 and the teams will be discussed by the executives. BCCI is doing exemplary work for cricket,” said Amin Pathan, Vice-President of Rajasthan Cricket Association. Also, it was decided that all first-class players, both men and women, will be suitably compensated for the curtailed domestic season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A 10-team IPL means 94 games and nearly two and half month window which can throw the international calender into disarray. Also the availability of the top foreign players for the entire duration of the IPL needs to be ensured and the broadcast money per year which is for 60 matches also needs to be re-negotiated. As of now, Star India pays ₹16,347.50 crore for a period between 2018-2022 and till date it was for 60 matches per year. Some of the biggest names who seem to be interested in buying teams include business tycoons Gautam Adani and Sanjeev Goenka (erstwhile owner of Rising Pune Supergiants).

According to a report in Times of India, BCCI has decided to allow only 8 teams for IPL 20021. The idea of ​​inducting 2 new teams has been postponed by the apex cricket board. There is a Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BCCI on 24 December in which this decision can be announced. The idea of ​​including 2 new teams in IPL 2021 has been postponed which means a 10-team T20 tournament can see the light of day from the 15th edition of Indian Premier League. According to a report published in Inside Sport, a BCCI official said, “Time is too short to launch two new teams in IPL 2021. Especially when there is also a new player auction. In this case, work is more and time is very less. If there are 2 new teams in the IPL, then it will be possible only in the 2022 season.”
