INDIA

Indian cricket fans have plenty to look forward to as the India national cricket team will embark on a massive multi-format tour of New Zealand between October and December 2026. The series, announced by New Zealand Cricket, will feature five T20 Internationals, five One-Day Internationals, and two Test matches, making it the largest inbound tour in New Zealand’s cricket history in terms of matches played.

With 12 international fixtures spread across the country’s major cricketing centres, the tour promises high-quality cricket and could play a crucial role in shaping both teams’ preparations for major ICC events in the coming years.

Biggest-Ever India Tour of New Zealand

The upcoming series marks a significant chapter in the cricketing rivalry between the two nations. While India and New Zealand have faced each other regularly in ICC tournaments and bilateral series, India have not toured New Zealand since the 2019-20 season for a full-fledged Test tour.

Since then, New Zealand have visited India twice, most notably during the 2024-25 Test series when the Kiwis created history by completing a stunning 3-0 whitewash on Indian soil.

The 2026 tour therefore carries added significance, with India eager to re-establish their dominance while New Zealand seek to maintain their recent success against one of world cricket’s strongest sides.

T20I Series to Kick Off the Tour

The action begins on October 22 with the opening T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The five-match T20I series will travel through some of New Zealand’s most iconic venues:

  • Christchurch – October 22 and 24
  • Wellington – October 27
  • Auckland – October 30
  • Hamilton – November 1

The shortest format has produced several memorable contests between the two teams in recent years.

Their most recent encounter came in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, adding another layer of intrigue to the upcoming series.

Earlier in 2026, New Zealand toured India for a white-ball series where they won the ODI leg 2-1 but suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in the T20Is. The five-match series in New Zealand offers an opportunity for both teams to continue building towards the next T20 World Cup cycle.

Crucial ODI Preparation Ahead of World Cup

Following the T20Is, attention will shift to the 50-over format with five ODIs scheduled between November 4 and November 15.

The ODI series could be particularly significant given the approaching 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

For Indian fans, the tour could offer another opportunity to watch legendary batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in international action. The duo have stepped away from other formats but remain available for One-Day Internationals, making the New Zealand series an important part of their World Cup preparations.

The ODI schedule includes matches at:

  • Eden Park
  • Wellington
  • Hamilton
  • Bay Oval

With only a year remaining before the World Cup, both teams are expected to use the series to fine-tune combinations, evaluate squad depth and identify key performers.

Test Series Adds Extra Edge

The tour will conclude with two highly anticipated Test matches.

The first Test will be played at the historic Basin Reserve from November 19 to 23, while the second Test will take place at Hagley Oval in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1.

These matches will carry extra importance considering New Zealand’s remarkable Test success in India during their last visit.

India’s players and supporters have not forgotten the 3-0 defeat at home, and the tour offers a chance to respond on New Zealand soil.

The conditions in Wellington and Christchurch are traditionally challenging for visiting teams, particularly fast bowlers and top-order batters. The contests are expected to test India’s adaptability while providing New Zealand another opportunity to showcase their strength in home conditions.

Star Attractions Expected

New Zealand Cricket expects unprecedented interest in the series.

The possibility of seeing global stars such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma has already generated excitement among local fans.

NZC Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Glenn Critchley described the series as one of the biggest events in the country’s cricketing calendar.

The enormous Indian fan base in New Zealand and the popularity of Indian cricket worldwide are expected to contribute to packed stadiums and strong television audiences.

New Zealand’s Busy Home Summer

The India tour forms the centrepiece of a packed 2026-27 New Zealand summer.

After India depart, New Zealand’s women’s team will host Bangladesh for a limited-overs series.

The men’s side will then travel to Australia for a four-Test series before returning home to host Sri Lanka in another full multi-format contest.

The Sri Lanka series will include:

  • Three ODIs
  • Three T20Is
  • Two Test matches

This schedule ensures New Zealand cricket remains active throughout the summer and provides valuable preparation for upcoming ICC tournaments.
