Jasprit Bumrah’s return to international cricket after injury has not been satisfying for the Indian team and himself too. Indian team is facing decline in the form of their premier fast-bowler since his return after injury.

Jasprit Bumrah has gone wicketless in the recently concluded WTC final against New Zealand. He was wicketless in both the innings. Jasprit Bumrah didn’t looked effective in the WTC final against kiwis. Jasprit Bumrah was the trump card for the Indian bowling line up but he didn’t came to rescue.

Jasprit Bumrah
Just the last few chances to secure his spot

Jasprit Bumrah has been incapable to bowl yorkers at will and this could be the reason behind his downfall.  Jasprit Bumrah has also been inconsistent with the line and length and has bowled some easy balls down the leg for runs. Jasprit Bumrah also bowled 4 no balls in the WTC final against New Zealand.

Batsmen in control against Jasprit Bumrah

This is the first time in Jasprit Bumrah’s career that he is going through a lean phase. Jasprit Bumrah was out from the international cricket due to injury and this can also be a cause in his decline. It has always been difficult for a medium Pacer to make a comeback after an injury.

His test form is not just worthy enough

Cricket experts are  finding out the reasons behind  Jasprit Bumrah’s lack of form. We have seen batsman playing defensively against Jasprit Bumrah and this has result it in less wickets for him since his comeback.  Batsmen are now used to his awkward bowling action and have decoded his variations.

Jasprit Bumrah’s shortening of length

Jasprit Bumrah is now bowling more short balls after his return .But the fact is that he was known a hit the deck bowler but now he is bowling 27.5% of balls short in length. His stock delivery has near 7m mark from the batsman and ball used to hit high on bat. The ball was neither too short to play on the back foot nor driven on front foot.  However, on the brighter side Jassie has been very economical for the Indian team in the recent past.

When will we see him shining again?

Most of Jasprit Bumrah’s wicket have been bowled or lbw. Since his return to the international cricket in 2020 the short-bowling percentage has been on the higher side . The swing has also disappeared with the shortening of length.  Nowadays , once world’s premier pacer is also not getting that late swing  because he is bowling too short. In the second opinion, he might be bowling short because he is not getting the swing. Well this might be the reason only known to him but management should have a look onto it as early as possible with England Test almost 3 weeks away.

What should be the way now?

Playing County Cricket should be the only way for him to get into groove. Just look at Ishant’s turnaround after playing few county season. Actually if you also see someone like Ravichandran Ashwin then also one can learn that not only a fast-bowler but also a spinner can learn few good tricks from County Cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah bowling more boundary balls

The cause of decline in Jasprit Bumrah’s number has been more boundary balls. The un-othrodox pacer is now bowling more boundary balls as compared to earlier phase. Batsman have always struggled against  Jasprit Bumrah and he is been picking more wickets. Since his return he is giving 49% of runs from boundaries. Every 9th ball bowled by him has gone for boundary.

Need to working on his both Form and Fitness

Zaheer Khan once said, “Not allowing the ego to come in the way when going through a lean patch as a bowler, for that makes your job tougher: you try harder to produce magic balls and end up conceding more boundaries.” Zaheer was the legendary fast bowler India produced before Jassi and he can be perfect torchbearer for him to get back into the groove. It’s quite fortunate for Jasprit is that he and Zaheer are associated with the same franchise in IPLs and they get almost 2 months times every year to learn the white magics of Cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah should stick to his plans during the lean phase and bowl some dry spells. We believe that  Jasprit Bumrah will make a strong comeback and will be in his wicket taking form again. However on the other side if Jaspirt Bumrah continues to disappoint like this then we have to accept that he is not far away from being dropped from at least India’s Red-Ball Teams.
