Rinku Singh hit five consecutive sixes in the last over to help Kolkata Knight Riders beat Gujarat Titans by three wickets in a breath-taking match. Stand-in captain Rashid Khan turned the match around with a hat-trick in the 16th over, but pacer Yash Dayal could not save the required 29 runs in the last over.

Rinku Singh scored 48 runs in 21 balls. After playing the first ball dot of the last over, Rinku sent the next five balls on air travel. Batting first after winning the toss, Gujarat Titans scored 204/4 thanks to half-centuries from Sai Sudarshan and Vijay Shankar, but KKR achieved the target by losing seven wickets in the last ball.

Rashid Khan’s hat-trick went in vain

In the absence of Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, who was captaining today, had saved an over of his own for Andre Russell. On the very first ball of the 16th over, he made Russell walk for just 1 run. Taking an inside edge of the bat, the ball hit the pads and went in the air, which was appealed by wicketkeeper KS Bharat as soon as he caught it, got the first wicket after taking the review.

On the next ball, Sunil Narine walked without opening the account. There was a miss time for a big shot on the leg side, which was caught by the fielder. Shardul Thakur was the third batsman to be dismissed on a hat-trick ball. Tossed on a good length and turns inside, the ball hits the pads straight.

The umpire raised his finger on the loud appeal. KKR’s review goes in vain. This was the first hat-trick of the 16th season, which pushed KKR from the mouth of victory to defeat.

Winning the toss and batting first, Gujarat Titans scored 204 runs for four wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Gujarat scored 45 runs in the last two overs, with Shankar hitting two fours and two sixes against Lockie Ferguson in the 19th over and three consecutive sixes against Shardul Thakur in the 20th over. Shankar hit four fours and five sixes in his unbeaten innings.

For Gujarat, Sai Sudarshan scored 53 off 38 balls while Shubman Gill contributed 39 off 31 balls. Both shared a 67-run partnership for the second wicket. Sunil Narine was the most successful bowler of KKR. He took three wickets for 33 runs in four overs. Suyyash Sharma (35 runs in four overs) got a breakthrough.
