In the very first match of the main round of the T20I World Cup 2022, defending champions Australia lost to New Zealand, the runners-up of the previous World Cup, by 89 runs.
The team defeated Australia in Australia in white ball cricket for the first time since February 2009. After winning the toss in this match, Australia captain Aaron Finch decided to bowl first.
Batting first, New Zealand had set a target of 201 runs in front of Australia but the entire team of Australia was dismissed after scoring only 111 runs.
