Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques show as Sydney Sixers beat Melbourne Stars
Sydney Sixers started their BBL season with a quest for a hat-trick of the league title dominantly by thrashing Melbourne Stars, who barely avoided the tag of the lowest total in the history of BBL but registered the largest defeat in terms of runs.
The Sydney sixers’ top order took the matter into their own hands with a 90-run stand for the first wicket between the skipper, Josh Philippe and James Vince. Even after losing the first wicket, the Sydney Sixers were in no mood of mercy towards the bowlers of Melbourne Stars.
Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques blasted half-centuries in a second-wicket stand of 102 in 8.3 overs. These two took the Sixers’ to their highest ever Big Bash League total. They were 0 for 40 after the four-over powerplay, 1 for 92 after the first ten overs and in the last ten overs capitalized on the start by scoring 121.
Melbourne Stars had a humongous target for chasing, and without their marquee player Marcus Stoinis they couldn’t even manage a run chase respectable enough. The Stars lost their first two wickets in the opening over, only against Steve O’Keefe who improvised his career-best tally with 4/14. Other than him Sean Abbot claimed 3 wickets and made sure to wrap up the innings of Melbourne Stars on 61 in just 11.1 overs.
Brief Scores – Sydney Sixers : 213/4 (Josh Philippe 83, Moises Henriques 76*; Brody Couch 2/36) defeated Melbourne Stars: 61/10(Peter Nevill 18; Steve 0’Keefe 4/14) by 152 runs.
