Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has made a triumphant return to the top of the badminton world by clinching the title at the Syed Modi International women’s singles tournament. This victory marks a significant milestone for Sindhu, as it ends her title drought that lasted over two years, with her last championship win occurring at the Singapore Open in July 2022.

In an impressive match, showing her skill and dominance, Sindhu, the top seed and currently ranked world number 18, outperformed China’s Wu Luo Yu, ranked 119 globally, with a decisive score of 21-14, 21-16. This championship win is Sindhu’s third at the Syed Modi International, having previously won this title in 2017 and 2022. Her consistent performance throughout the tournament showcased her resilience and ability to bounce back after a challenging period.

Besides Sindhu’s extraordinary achievement, Indian badminton saw further success as Lakshya Sen, a 2021 World Championships bronze medallist, secured the men’s singles title by defeating Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh with a commanding score of 21-6, 21-7.

Lakshya’s victory serves as a morale booster following his recent disappointment in the bronze-medal playoff at the Paris Olympics, setting a positive tone for his upcoming season.

The successes in the tournament didn’t stop there for Indian badminton. The women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made history by claiming their maiden Super 300 title, defeating China’s Bao Li Jing and Li Qian with a score of 21-18, 21-11. This marks a remarkable achievement for the pair, who had finished as runners-up in the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Though the men’s doubles team of Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek K put up a valiant effort, they fell short against China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang in a closely contested match, which lasted 71 minutes. Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles final, fifth seeds Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila were unable to maintain their momentum, losing to Thailand’s sixth-seeded pair.

Sindhu’s remarkable performance at the Syed Modi International serves as a reminder of her extraordinary talent and steadfast determination. With this monumental victory, PV Sindhu has reinvigorated her career, signaling a promising future in the world of badminton.
