England could turn to Joe Root as interim Test captain and Marcus Trescothick as stand-in head coach for next month’s three-match Test series against Pakistan, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) continues its search for a permanent coaching appointment.

While no final decision has been made, Root has emerged as the leading candidate to temporarily replace the retired Ben Stokes, with Trescothick likely to oversee the team if a new head coach is not appointed before the series begins on August 19.

ECB Continues Coaching Search

England managing director Rob Key is leading the recruitment process for a new Test head coach with the assistance of an external headhunting firm.

Several high-profile candidates have already been approached for initial discussions, including Stephen Fleming, Jonathan Trott, Richard Dawson, and Tom Moody.

Former England coach Andy Flower was initially among the frontrunners but recently withdrew from consideration, choosing to continue his franchise coaching commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit.

The ECB has also indicated it is open to flexible coaching arrangements, including a potential job-sharing model, although such an arrangement would be difficult to implement.

Trescothick Could Step In

If the recruitment process extends beyond the start of the Pakistan series, Marcus Trescothick is expected to take charge on an interim basis.

Trescothick served as Brendon McCullum’s assistant coach and is already familiar with England’s Test setup, making him the most straightforward short-term option.

Root Favourite to Lead

Joe Root is currently the frontrunner to captain England during the Pakistan series.

The experienced batter previously led England in 65 Test matches between 2017 and 2022, recording 27 victories and 27 defeats during his tenure.

Root also captained England in last month’s Test against New Zealand in Ben Stokes’ absence and later admitted he had enjoyed returning to the leadership role despite the team’s defeat.

Although the ECB insists no final decision has been taken, Root is widely expected to lead the side if an interim captain is required.

Brook Still a Long-Term Option

Harry Brook remains one of the strongest contenders for England’s permanent Test captaincy.

Before retiring, Ben Stokes publicly backed Brook as his successor, and the young batter has already formed a successful partnership with Brendon McCullum in England’s white-ball teams.

Under Brook’s captaincy, England recently defeated India 4-0 in the T20I series and 2-1 in the ODI series, results that lifted England to the top of the ICC T20I rankings.

However, the ECB is reportedly reluctant to disrupt that successful white-ball leadership combination.

Several Leadership Options

England are considering multiple possibilities for the future of the Test team.

One option is appointing Root as interim captain before handing the role permanently to Brook after the Pakistan series.

Another possibility is giving Brook responsibility across all formats.

The ECB could also separate the captaincy between red-ball and white-ball cricket or even look toward younger players such as Jacob Bethell, although the injured all-rounder currently lacks leadership experience at international level.

Ashes Preparation a Priority

England’s immediate focus is preparing for the 2027 Ashes against Australia.

Before that series begins, England will play 10 Test matches, including:

• Three Tests against Pakistan at home.
• Three Tests in South Africa.
• Two Tests in Bangladesh.
• The historic 150th Anniversary Test in Melbourne.
• A home Test against Bangladesh.

The ECB views these fixtures as crucial in building a settled leadership group before the Ashes.

Decision Expected Soon

England’s Test series against Pakistan begins on August 19 at Headingley, just three days after the conclusion of The Hundred.

With the squad set to assemble soon, the ECB is expected to announce its interim captain and coaching arrangements in the coming weeks if a permanent appointment cannot be finalized in time.

For now, Joe Root appears the strongest candidate to temporarily return as England’s Test captain, while Marcus Trescothick is poised to guide the team from the dressing room if required.
