Afghanistan are set to host India in a three-match T20 International series in Delhi this September, marking the first time the Afghan team will host India on Indian soil. Although the schedule is yet to be officially confirmed, the matches are expected to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on September 13, 15 and 17.
The series will provide both teams with valuable preparation ahead of a busy international calendar and the upcoming Asian Games.
Historic Home Series for Afghanistan
While Afghanistan have used India as their home venue for several years, this will be the first occasion they host the Indian team in the country.
Previously, Afghanistan have staged home international matches in Lucknow, Dehradun and Greater Noida, but none of those fixtures were against India.
The upcoming series therefore marks another milestone in the cricketing relationship between the two nations.
Fits into India’s Busy Schedule
The T20I series has been scheduled between India’s Test tour of Sri Lanka and the Asian Games.
India’s second Test against Sri Lanka is due to conclude on August 27, giving the team more than two weeks before the opening T20I against Afghanistan.
The three-match series will also finish a week before the Asian Games begin in Japan on September 24, allowing players sufficient time to prepare for the multi-sport event.
Recent Meeting Dominated by India
The two teams last met in June when Afghanistan toured India for a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series.
India dominated the contest, winning the Test by an innings and 300 runs inside three days in New Chandigarh before completing a clean 3-0 sweep in the ODI series.
Afghanistan will now be hoping to produce a stronger performance in the shortest format when the sides meet again.
India Looking to Regain Form
Despite entering the year as the reigning T20 World Cup champions, India have endured a disappointing run in white-ball cricket.
The team suffered a T20I series defeat against Ireland in Belfast before losing 4-0 to England in another T20I series, with one match abandoned due to rain.
India also lost the ODI series against England 2-1 and are currently involved in a three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.
The Afghanistan series offers India an opportunity to rebuild momentum ahead of future international assignments.

Afghanistan Return After T20 World Cup
Afghanistan have not played a T20 International since the 2026 T20 World Cup in India.
During the tournament, they won two of their four group-stage matches but narrowly missed qualification for the Super Eight stage.
The upcoming series against India will mark their return to international T20 cricket and provide an opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s strongest teams.
Official Confirmation Awaited
Although the Afghanistan Cricket Board and the BCCI are yet to officially announce the fixtures, the series is expected to go ahead as planned in Delhi.
If confirmed, the matches will not only strengthen cricketing ties between the two countries but also offer fans the rare opportunity to witness Afghanistan hosting India in a home series for the very first time.
