In 1900, India first took part in Olympic games and won two silver medals, both in athletics. India became the first Asian country to win an Olympic medal. India has won 32 medals at Summer Olympic Games. The Indian hockey team dominated the Olympics between 1928 and 1980. India won 11 medals ine 12 Olympic Games including 8 gold medals. India won six consecutive gold medals in hockey.

Athens Olympic games, 2004

The attendance Olympic games were held in 2004 from 13 August to 29th August. Indian contingent consisted of 73 athletes ,comprising 48 men and 28 women. Men’s hockey was the only team game in which India participated. In this Olympic game , India won only one medal.

Captain Rajvardhan Singh Rathore won the silver medal for India in shooting. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore became the first Indian to win an individual silver medal.

Beijing Olympic games, 2008

The 2008 Olympics were held in Beijing ,China. The Indian contingent consisted of 57 athletes. India represented in only 12 sport and had a support staff of 42.

In this event the men’s hockey team were unable to qualify and this was the first time after 1928 that Olympic was held without the men’s hockey team. Wrestler Mounika Devi  was banned by International weightlifting Federation for two years after the 2006 Commonwealth games doping scandal.

Abhinav Bindra the gold medal in mens 10 metre air rifle. This was the use achievement for India in shooting. This was India’s first individual gold medal. This was the second medal at Olympics in shooting. Wrestler Sushil Kumar won the bronze medal and became the only second wrestler to win a medal in Olympic games after Dada Saheb Jadhav. Vijendra Kumar won the bronze medal in boxing and became the first Indian to win Olympic medal in boxing.

Beijing Olympic Games 2008 was the best women’s by the Indian condition till that date in terms of medal. India won total of three medals in that Olympics.

London Olympic games, 2012

The 2012 Olympic games were held in in London from 27 July to 12 August. In London Olympics 2012, the Indian contingent consisted of 83 athletes comprising 60 men and 23 women. India took part in 13 Sports and men’s hockey was the only team sport in which India was taking part.

The gold medalist of Beijing Olympics, Abhinav Bindra failed to qualify for the final round in shooting. Wrestler Sushil Kumar  carried on his Beijing form and won the second bronze medal. He was also the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. This was the most successful Olympic Games in terms of medal. India won a six medals including two silver and four bronze. This was the first time that Indian female athletes won two Olympic medals.  Sania Nehwal won the bronze medal in badminton and Mary Kom also won the bronze medal in boxing.

Rio Olympic games, 2016

The 2016 Olympic games were held in Rio de Janerio Brazil from 5 to 21 August. The Indian contingent consisted of 117 athletes participating in 15 Sports. There was 63 men athlete and 54 women athletes. This was the India’s largest contingent for the Olympics of all-time. For the first time India also represented in Golf in 2016 Olympics.

The gold medalist of 2008 Olympics Abhinav Bindra was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. India only managed to win two medals at Rio Olympic games. PV Sindhu the badminton superstar won the Silver Medal and Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal in women’s 58 kg freestyle wrestling. This was the first time after 2004 that Indian Shooter failed to win a medal in Olympic games. Abhinav Bindra missed out the podium finish by just half point in men’s 10-m air rifle and retired after this Olympic games. Deepa Karmakar , the gymnastic won the hearts all over the world with her high risk produnova routine in women’s vault.

Tokyo Olympic Games , 2020*

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is taking place from 24 July to 9th August. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed due to Covid pandemic. In Tokyo Olympics India has send its largest contingent consisting of 124 athletes. India has almost appeared in every edition of the summer Olympics since 1920. Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh were the flag bearers at the opening ceremony.

PV Sindhu once again proved his worth and won the bronze medal in badminton. She was also the Silver medalist in 2016 Rio Olympic games. She became the only woman athlete for India to win 2 Olympic medals .Mary Kom did not manage to win a medal in her last Olympic games. The Indian shooting team qualified for the finals in every event but failed to win a medal for India.

Mirabai Chanu, won the silver medal in weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu opened the account on the medal tally for Indian contingent contingent. The world seen the rise of Indian men’s Hockey Team in this Olympic games. Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal by defeating Germany.  Lovlina Borgohain won the bronze medal in boxing.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the silver medal in wrestling for India. India is eyeing on more medals in this Olympic games. This could be the best Olympic games for  India in terms of medals. Till now India has won 5 medal comprising two silver and three bronze in Tokyo Olympics 2020. All eyes will be on Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, Women’s Hockey Team, Golfer Aditi Ashok and wrestler Bajrang Punia.
