Team India’s squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England has been announced by the BCCI, marking a significant chapter in India’s cricket journey towards the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship. This series is especially important as India navigates a period of transition following the retirements of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Here’s the Probable Playing-XI of Team India in 1st test:

Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to open the batting for Team India. The young gun has already proven his mettle with a century in Australia during the 2024-25 tour and has accumulated 1798 runs in 19 matches at an impressive average of 52.88. His experience in SENA nations, with 441 runs from 7 matches, suggests he’s ready to face England’s swing and pace.

KL Rahul will likely partner Jaiswal at the top. Versatile and experienced, Rahul has scored 2803 runs in 48 matches as an opener for India, including 1272 runs in SENA countries at an average of 32.61. His resilience in tough conditions makes him a key player in this series.

Shubman Gill, the newly designated captain of Team India, is set to take the crucial role of the number three batter. With 1893 runs in 32 matches, Gill’s recent form and leadership qualities will be vital. However, his average in SENA nations remains modest at 25.70, and he will need to adapt quickly to England’s conditions.

Karun Nair, returning after a long hiatus, has shown stellar form in domestic cricket with a remarkable Ranji season tally of 863 runs at an average of 53.93. Nair’s experience of 8211 FC runs at nearly 50 will be an asset if called upon.

Rishabh Pant, as wicketkeeper and vice-captain, continues to be India’s aggressive middle-order batter. His record includes 2948 runs at 42-plus in 43 tests, making him a potent match-winner.

Ravindra Jadeja, offers a blend of experience with bat and ball, with 3370 runs and 323 wickets for India. His familiarity with English conditions, with 56 wickets, will be crucial.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, the versatile all-rounder, impressed with a fighting century in Australia and will aim to contribute with both bat and ball, adding depth to Team India’s pace department.

Shardul Thakur, is known for his aggressive batting and reliable bowling, often providing valuable breakthroughs. His ability to adapt in Test cricket makes him a key player.

Jasprit Bumrah, Team India’s pace spearhead, remains a vital asset despite injury setbacks. With 145 wickets in SENA, he is considered one of the best pacers, expected to feature in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tests, with rests in between.

Mohammed Siraj, experienced and dependable, will lead the pace attack when Bumrah is resting. His 100 wickets in 36 matches underline his importance.

Arshdeep Singh, is all set to make his debut for Team India in this series. Known for his yorkers and swing, Arshdeep has been a standout in limited-overs cricket and now aims to make an impact in Test cricket, adding fresh pace and skill to the bowling attack.
