Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has officially taken charge as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), marking the beginning of a fresh era for the country’s cricket administration. The 37-year-old was elected unopposed during the board elections held in Dhaka and will serve a four-year term.
Tamim had already been leading the board for the past two months as the head of the ad-hoc committee formed by the Bangladesh government. Sunday’s election formally confirmed his position, making him the 21st president in the history of the BCB.
Election Held After Major Administrative Shake-Up
The BCB elections were conducted after the government dissolved the previous board led by Aminul Islam following an investigation into alleged corruption. A probe committee reportedly found irregularities involving former board officials and recommended structural reforms within the organization.
With a mandate to restore confidence in Bangladesh cricket, Tamim emphasized that transparency and accountability would remain the cornerstones of his administration.
Speaking after his appointment, the former opener acknowledged that constitutional reforms may be necessary to strengthen the board’s functioning. However, he stressed that any changes would require the approval of the 1972 councillors who form the BCB’s electoral body.
“We will discuss every possible reform if it benefits Bangladesh cricket. Any amendment must have the support of the councillors, and we are ready to work together for the future of the game,” Tamim said.

Transparency at the Top of the Agenda
Tamim made it clear that his administration intends to operate with complete honesty and openness. He admitted that mistakes are inevitable but insisted that correcting them quickly would be a priority.
“I do not want any board member to be involved in activities that create controversy. We will work with integrity and remain as transparent as possible,” he stated.
The former captain also revealed that several initiatives had already begun during his tenure as the head of the interim committee and expressed confidence that they would soon be implemented.
Dominant Victory in the Elections
The election process took place at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium and included both physical voting and electronic ballots. Tamim secured an overwhelming 73 votes out of 75 in the Category 2 voting for Dhaka-based clubs, comfortably finishing ahead of a field of 16 candidates competing for 12 director positions.
Following the first meeting of the newly elected board, Fahim Sinha was appointed vice-president after receiving 66 votes.
The elections completed the formation of a 25-member governing body that will oversee Bangladesh cricket for the next four years.
Several prominent candidates secured board positions, including Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed and Israfil Khasru, who both received 72 votes. Masuduzzaman polled 70 votes, while Yasir Mohammad Faisal Ashik secured 68. Other successful candidates included Sakib Ahmed Salam, Asif Rabbani, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Md Rafiqul Islam Babu and Prof. Dr. Sarker Mahbub Ahmed Shamim.
In the divisional contests, Mohammad Shafiqul Alam and Shantanu Islam were elected from Khulna, while Mohammad Mizanur Rahman claimed the Barishal seat.
Eight directors had already secured their places unopposed before the voting process, including former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin Nannu. Additionally, two National Sports Council nominees completed the full 25-member board.
A New Beginning for Bangladesh Cricket
Tamim Iqbal’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Bangladesh cricket. Beyond improving governance, the new administration faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and creating a stable environment for the sport’s long-term growth.
Having enjoyed one of the finest playing careers in Bangladesh’s history, Tamim now steps into a leadership role off the field. His experience, popularity and understanding of the game could prove valuable as the BCB looks to move beyond recent controversies and focus on developing the next generation of Bangladeshi cricketers.
With transparency, reform and stability at the heart of his vision, Tamim’s presidency will be closely watched by fans and stakeholders alike as Bangladesh cricket enters a new chapter.
