Indian cricket is stepping into another phase of transition, and the selectors have made that message loud and clear with the squad announced for the one-off Test against Afghanistan next month. The inclusion of fresh faces like Harsh Dubey, Manav Suthar and Gurnoor Brar signals a shift toward building a new core for India’s future in red-ball cricket.
The Test, scheduled to be played from June 6 to 10 in Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, is more than just another fixture on the calendar. It represents the beginning of a rebuilding phase for the Indian Test side after several senior players either stepped away from the format or were rested to manage workload.
Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India’s squad carries a blend of youth, experience, and experimentation. While familiar names such as KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Siraj continue to anchor the side, the focus of the announcement was undoubtedly on the newcomers.
Harsh Dubey Earns Reward for All-Round Ability
Perhaps the most eye-catching selection is that of left-arm spinning all-rounder Harsh Dubey. The selectors have shown faith in a player who offers balance with both bat and ball — something India increasingly values in modern Test cricket.
Dubey’s first-class numbers may not immediately grab headlines, but his skill set clearly impressed the selection committee. The left-hander has scored over 1000 runs in first-class cricket while also contributing regularly with the ball. His ability to strengthen the lower order while functioning as a frontline spinner appears to have played a major role in his inclusion.
Interestingly, his selection came ahead of Axar Patel, who had already been absent from India’s previous Test assignment against South Africa. This suggests the management is actively looking beyond established names and testing players who could serve long-term roles.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that the team management wants cricketers capable of contributing in multiple departments. According to Agarkar, India are searching for bowlers who can also provide valuable runs lower down the order, especially during overseas tours and difficult batting conditions.
Dubey fits that profile perfectly.
Manav Suthar Continues His Rapid Rise
Another major talking point from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Rajasthan spinner Manav Suthar.
Suthar has quietly built a reputation as one of the most promising left-arm spinners in domestic cricket. Though he played only three Ranji Trophy matches last season, he made every opportunity count. His standout performance came against Chhattisgarh, where he claimed an outstanding 8 for 42.
But Suthar’s contribution has not been limited to bowling alone. Against Himachal Pradesh, he showcased his all-round potential by scoring a century and also taking seven wickets in the match. Performances like these strengthened his case for national selection.
The selectors were also impressed by his performances for India A during the unofficial Test series against Australia A last year. Suthar picked up eight wickets across the series and looked comfortable against quality opposition.
At a time when India are carefully preparing the next generation of spin bowlers, Suthar’s inclusion suggests he is being viewed as a serious long-term prospect.
Gurnoor Brar Adds Fresh Pace Option
Punjab pacer Gurnoor Brar is the third uncapped player in the squad and perhaps the most intriguing selection among the seamers.
Brar may not have extensive Ranji Trophy experience yet, but his performances for India A clearly caught the selectors’ attention. During the unofficial Tests against Australia A, he finished as one of the leading wicket-takers alongside Suthar.
The left-arm pacer brings variety to India’s attack, something the team management has been actively looking to develop. With senior fast bowlers frequently rotated due to workload concerns, India are now investing in younger seamers who can adapt quickly to international cricket.
Agarkar specifically highlighted Brar’s batting capability along with his bowling skill, indicating that India are prioritising multi-dimensional cricketers rather than specialists alone.
Rest for Bumrah and Jadeja
India have decided to rest two of their biggest Test stars — Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja — for the Afghanistan Test.
The move is not surprising considering the heavy workload both players have carried over the last few years. Bumrah, in particular, has battled recurring fitness concerns, and India appear determined to manage his workload carefully ahead of bigger assignments later in the season.
Jadeja’s absence also opens the door for younger spin options to gain exposure at the international level.
Meanwhile, pacer Akash Deep misses out due to a back-stress injury, continuing an unfortunate run of fitness setbacks for the fast bowler.
KL Rahul Named Vice-Captain
One of the notable leadership decisions from the selection meeting was appointing KL Rahul as India’s vice-captain in Tests.
Rahul replaces Rishabh Pant in the role, though the selectors clarified that the change is not linked to Pant’s position in the side.
Agarkar explained that Rahul’s prior experience as Test captain and his calm presence made him the preferred option. The selectors also feel Rahul provides stability if captain Shubman Gill is unavailable during a match.
Gill himself continues to grow into leadership responsibilities as India gradually transition toward a younger leadership group.
Rishabh Pant Remains Central to India’s Plans
Despite losing the vice-captaincy, Rishabh Pant remains one of the most important players in India’s Test setup.
Agarkar strongly backed Pant, calling him one of India’s premier Test batters. The wicketkeeper-batter has consistently delivered match-winning performances in the longest format, especially overseas.
Although Pant is currently outside India’s ODI plans, the selectors appear unconcerned about his red-ball future. His aggressive batting style and ability to change games within sessions continue to make him invaluable in Test cricket.
Prasidh Krishna Returns
Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna makes a return to the Test squad after missing the home series against West Indies and South Africa.
Prasidh last appeared in red-ball cricket during India’s tour of England in 2025. His comeback provides India with additional pace and bounce, qualities that can be useful even in Indian conditions.
Alongside him, Mohammed Siraj retains his place as one of the senior fast bowlers in the squad.

Auqib Nabi Dar Misses Out Despite Historic Ranji Season
One of the biggest omissions from the squad is Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi Dar.
Dar enjoyed a sensational Ranji Trophy campaign, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 60 wickets at an exceptional average. His performances played a huge role in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic success during the domestic season.
Many believed his numbers deserved national recognition, but the selectors opted against adding another seamer for a one-off home Test likely to favour spin.
Agarkar admitted that Dar was seriously discussed during selection meetings and praised his performances across consecutive domestic seasons. However, team balance and conditions ultimately worked against him.
A Glimpse Into India’s Future
The Afghanistan Test may only be a single match, but its significance extends far beyond five days of cricket.
India are clearly entering a transition period where identifying and grooming the next generation has become a priority. With senior players nearing the latter stages of their careers and workload management becoming increasingly important, opportunities are opening up for domestic performers to step onto the international stage.
The selections of Harsh Dubey, Manav Suthar, and Gurnoor Brar reflect a broader strategy — investing in cricketers who offer versatility, temperament, and long-term value.
For the newcomers, this Test is more than a debut opportunity. It is a chance to establish themselves in one of the most competitive teams in world cricket.
