The International Cricket Council (ICC) is embarking on an ambitious project to launch its very own mobile cricket game, aiming to diversify its revenue streams in light of potential declines in future broadcast rights values.

This initiative marks a significant shift for the ICC, which is breaking new ground by developing a game directly, as opposed to collaborating with existing game developers.

The concept has been a topic of discussion during previous meetings, but the ICC is now seeking approval from its Full Members to issue a tender to developers. The chief executives’ committee (CEC) will review the proposal during their board meetings commencing today in Harare.

With the mobile gaming market projected to be valued at around $3 billion in India by 2024, the ICC’s interest reflects a keen awareness of lucrative opportunities in this rapidly growing sector.

Historical references to cricket gaming highlight the success of franchises like EA Sports’ Cricket series and Codemasters’ Brian Lara Cricket. However, the ICC’s initiative could redefine the landscape, reminiscent of the successful partnership between FIFA and EA Sports over the past 30 years.

Securing licensing agreements for player names and likenesses, particularly in bilateral and domestic contexts, will be a crucial component as the ICC navigates a complex web of rights management.

Notably, the ICC must negotiate player rights with individual cricket boards and the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA). Recent disputes over player NIL rights in Australia and New Zealand showcase the challenges ahead. The absence of a player association for Indian cricketers further complicates matters, with IPL team sponsorships potentially influencing the game’s appeal.
