The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that Harry Brook is the new white-ball captain for the national team, succeeding Jos Buttler. This decision comes on the heels of Buttler’s departure from the position following a disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
Harry Brook expressed his excitement and gratitude upon receiving the captaincy, stating, “It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”

Brook’s leadership journey has already begun; he had served as the vice-captain in various formats and even captained the side in Buttler’s absence.
The ECB is optimistic about Brook’s potential, with director of cricket Rob Key indicating that Brook might just be the spark the team needs to reclaim their dominance in global tournaments.
Key stated, “Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups, and major global tournaments.”

While Brook’s ascent to captaincy comes earlier than many anticipated, he brings with him invaluable experience, having previously led the England Lions and captained at the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup. The lack of other prominent captaincy candidates, particularly with Ben Stokes’ uncertain status in ODIs, has created a clear path for Brook to take the helm.
With the ECB backing Harry Brook, the young cricketer is set to usher in a new era for English cricket in T20s and ODIs, promising an exciting future on the international stage.
