The runner ups in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Croatia is now in the Semi finals of 2022 FIFA World Cup by eliminating the World Cup favourites, the team with the best squad depth and talent on the bench, Brazil by taking the match deep into the penalties which Croatia has never lost in the history of FIFA World Cup till now.
What happened in Croatia vs Brazil?
Croatia won by 4-2 on penalties after a nailbiting last-eight tie finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, thanks to Crotia’s equalizer in 117th minute of the game. Marquinhos missed the crucial penalty, hitting the bottom left post after beating the keeper dive which he had to score to keep Brazil alive in the match after Rodrygo first penalty was saved by Livakovic and Croatia converted all four of their penalties. Neymar didn’t even got a chance to take his penalty.
It was a remarkable turnaround after Brazil had looked set for victory when Neymar opened the scoring with a wonderful strike midway through extra time that allowed him to equal Pele’s Brazilian record of 77 international goals.
But the substitutions made by Dalic in the extra time putting Orisic on the field who assisted the 117th minute equalizer of Bruno Petkovic for Croatia to force a shoot-out, and Zlatko Dalic’s team followed up their win over Japan on penalties in the last round with this victory, which must go down as their greatest ever triumph. They advance to the semi-finals, while Brazil will have to wait at least another four years before winning a record-extending sixth title. Since their last World cup win in 2002, Brazil have been eliminated from the Quarter Finals in all the editions except the 2014 one.
Neymar, who left the pitch in tears had fired Brazil into the lead at the end of the first half of extra-time, working one-twos with Rodrygo and Lucas Paqueta before rounding goalkeeper Livakovic to score. But it did not break Croatia’s resistance as the 2018 World Cup finalists hit back to level.
