ROHIT

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed speculation that the upcoming ODI against England at Lord’s will be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that there has been no discussion regarding the veteran opener’s retirement and insisted that he remains an important part of India’s ODI plans.

Rumours about Rohit’s future gained momentum during the second ODI in Cardiff after another modest batting performance, but the BCCI has now moved to end the speculation.

BCCI Clarifies Rohit’s Future

Speaking on the issue, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that reports suggesting Rohit would retire after the Lord’s ODI are incorrect.

He said there had been no discussions within the board regarding Rohit’s retirement and confirmed that the 39-year-old continues to be a regular member of India’s ODI squad.

According to Saikia, Rohit will keep representing India as long as he remains part of the team’s plans, making it clear that Sunday’s match at Lord’s is not expected to be his farewell appearance.

Retirement Speculation Intensified

Questions over Rohit’s future increased during the ongoing ODI series against England.

The Indian opener scored 11 runs in the first ODI at Edgbaston before making 26 off 47 deliveries in the second match at Cardiff. His cautious innings sparked fresh debate over whether the former captain was nearing the end of his international career.

With India looking to build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, discussions surrounding the future of senior players have naturally intensified.

Batting Coach Backs Rohit

Despite the criticism surrounding Rohit’s recent performances, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak expressed complete confidence in the experienced opener.

Following India’s defeat in Cardiff, Kotak said Rohit was not under any pressure and expected him to produce a much stronger performance in the third ODI at Lord’s.

The support from the coaching staff reflects the faith that still exists within the Indian dressing room regarding Rohit’s ability to perform at the highest level.

Selectors Planning for the Future

Although the BCCI has denied retirement rumours, India’s selectors have reportedly begun planning for the future.

Ahead of the England ODI series, Rohit was informed that younger opening batters would gradually receive more opportunities as India begins preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Discussions regarding Rohit’s long-term future are understood to have started during IPL 2026, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir involved in the conversations.

The move reflects India’s strategy of balancing experienced players with the next generation while preparing for another World Cup cycle.

Rohit Continues to Break Records

Despite questions surrounding his place in the side, Rohit continues to achieve significant milestones.

Earlier this year, during the ODI series against Afghanistan in Dharamsala, he became the oldest male cricketer to represent India in One-Day Internationals, surpassing the previous record held by Mohinder Amarnath.

During that series, Rohit scored 16, 48 and 79, showing that he remains capable of contributing valuable innings.

ODI Cricket Remains His Only Format

Over the past year, Rohit’s international career has been limited exclusively to One-Day Internationals.

He retired from T20 Internationals after captaining India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025.

As a result, the ODI format has become his sole focus at the international level.

It also remains the format in which he has enjoyed the greatest success throughout his career.

One of ODI Cricket’s Greatest Batters

Rohit Sharma’s record in One-Day Internationals places him among the greatest players in the history of the format.

He has scored 11,757 ODI runs at an average of 48.58, making him the seventh-highest run-scorer in ODI history.

He also holds one of cricket’s most remarkable records—the highest individual ODI score of 264, achieved against Sri Lanka in 2014.

Rohit remains the only batter to score three double centuries in One-Day Internationals, a feat unmatched by any other player.

His 33 ODI centuries rank third on the all-time list behind Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

One of the finest periods of his career came during the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he scored five centuries, setting a tournament record that still stands today.

Focus Remains on England Series

For now, his attention remains firmly on helping India finish the England ODI series strongly.

While conversations about succession planning will continue as the 2027 World Cup approaches, the BCCI’s latest statement has made it clear that there are currently no plans for the veteran opener to retire.
