Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has expressed confidence in the inclusion of Sanju Samson in India’s ODI series against South Africa. Despite Samson’s absence from the 2023 World Cup squad, his return for the upcoming 50-over series against the Proteas signifies a noteworthy comeback onto the national stage.

Having made his debut in 2021 against Sri Lanka, the Kerala batter’s ODI journey has been characterized by sporadic appearances. In 13 matches, Samson has accumulated 390 runs at an impressive average of 55.71 and a strike rate of 104, featuring three half-centuries. De Villiers is optimistic about Samson’s stint in South Africa, highlighting not only his batting prowess but also his skills as a wicketkeeper.

“It’s great to see him in the team. He will enjoy the South African wickets. He stands tall when he bats. There’s a bit of bounce and movement, and all the batters will be tested. But someone like Sanju, I think, will do well. And he also gives you an option with the gloves,” de Villiers mentioned on his YouTube channel.

The ODI series between India and South Africa is set to kick off on Sunday, December 17, at Johannesburg’s New Wanderers Stadium. Subsequent matches will be held at St George’s Park in Gqeberha and Boland Park in Paarl on December 19 and 21, respectively. Notably, star players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli won’t be part of the white-ball series, having made a request to the board.
