Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza survived some late nervous moments to finally book the tickets for the finals. Mirza is now into her first mixed doubles final at a major since the 2017 Australian Open and it is also Bopanna’s first after the 2018 Australian Open. Mirza, 36, and Bopanna, 42, will face one of Olivia Gadecki/Marc Polmans and Luisa Stefani/Rafael Matos.
Earlier, the Indian pair reached the semi-finals after receiving a walkover in their quarter-final match against the Latvian and Spanish pair of Jelena Ostapenko and David Vega Hernandez. Earlier, they had defeated the Uruguayan and Japanese pair of Ariel Behar and Makato Ninomiya 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) on Court 7 to make it into the last 8.
If the Indian pair succeed in the finals, Mirza will win her first mixed doubles major since the 2014 US Open and, overall, since the 2016 Australia Open. Meanwhile, Bopanna is targeting his first mixed title since the 2017 French Open which is his only major trophy.
Ahead of the start of the tournament, Sania had already announced that this would be her final Grand Slam. So, this Australian Open could give a happy ending for Sania Mirza in her Grand Slam career.
