Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) began their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion, registering a commanding six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Chasing a challenging target of 202, RCB displayed remarkable batting firepower, reaching 203 for 4 in just 15.4 overs to underline their title credentials early in the tournament.
This was not just a routine chase—it was a statement performance built on discipline with the ball and explosive intent with the bat.
Duffy Sets the Tone Early
The foundation of RCB’s victory was laid by debutant Jacob Duffy, who delivered a clinical spell that dismantled SRH’s top order. Filling in for the absent Josh Hazlewood, Duffy ensured there was no void in the bowling attack.
SRH were reduced to 29 for 3 early in the innings, thanks largely to Duffy’s precision and clever use of the short ball. He removed dangerous openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head in the same over, before also accounting for Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 22, including 13 dot balls, Duffy’s spell ensured SRH never fully capitalized on what appeared to be a batting-friendly surface.
SRH Recover Through Kishan and Klaasen
Despite the early collapse, SRH found momentum through a brilliant counterattack led by stand-in skipper Ishan Kishan. His explosive 80 off just 38 balls brought SRH back into the contest.
Kishan, along with Heinrich Klaasen, stitched together a crucial 97-run partnership that shifted the pressure back onto RCB. Kishan was particularly aggressive against the spinners, taking apart Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma with a mix of calculated aggression and clean hitting.
Even after Kishan’s dismissal, SRH continued to push the scoring rate.
Late Surge Powers SRH Past 200
Youngster Aniket Verma provided the finishing flourish with a blistering 43 off 18 balls. His assault included a memorable over against Romario Shepherd, where he smashed 24 runs, showcasing fearless hitting under pressure.
Although wickets fell regularly, SRH managed to post a competitive total of 201 for 9 in their 20 overs—a score that seemed slightly below par given the conditions but still challenging.
RCB’s Explosive Start Seals the Chase
If SRH had hopes of defending the total, they were quickly dashed by RCB’s aggressive start. Devdutt Padikkal led the charge with a stunning display of strokeplay.
Padikkal raced to a 21-ball fifty—one of the fastest for RCB against SRH—and dominated the powerplay. By the end of the first six overs, RCB had surged to 76 for 1, with Padikkal contributing 46 off just 17 deliveries.
His innings of 61 off 26 balls set the tone for the chase, effectively taking the game away from SRH within the first half.
Kohli Anchors with Authority
While Padikkal provided the fireworks, Virat Kohli played the perfect supporting role—calm, composed, and calculated.
Kohli’s unbeaten 69 off 38 balls was a masterclass in chasing under pressure. He built key partnerships, first with Padikkal and then with Rajat Patidar, ensuring that the required run rate never spiraled out of control.
Even when given a lifeline due to a dropped catch by Klaasen, Kohli capitalized fully, finishing the game with authority. His innings included five fours and five sixes, striking at an impressive rate of over 180.
Fielding Brilliance Adds to RCB’s Dominance
RCB’s dominance was not limited to batting and bowling. Phil Salt delivered a standout performance in the field, pulling off multiple stunning catches.
From a well-judged boundary catch to dismiss Head, to a tumbling effort that removed Klaasen, Salt’s fielding was exceptional. The highlight, however, was a one-handed stunner to dismiss Kishan—an effort reminiscent of the acrobatic brilliance often associated with AB de Villiers.

Missing Cummins Hurts SRH
SRH clearly felt the absence of their regular captain Pat Cummins. Without his leadership and bowling expertise, the team struggled to control RCB’s aggressive batting lineup.
The inability to contain runs during the powerplay and middle overs ultimately proved costly, as RCB chased down the target with ease.
What’s Next?
RCB will now look ahead to a marquee clash against Chennai Super Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 5. With momentum on their side, they will aim to continue their winning run.
Meanwhile, SRH will travel to Kolkata to face Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 2, hoping to bounce back from this defeat.
This match was a complete performance from Royal Challengers Bengaluru. From Jacob Duffy’s early breakthroughs to Devdutt Padikkal’s explosive batting and Virat Kohli’s composed finish, every aspect of their game clicked perfectly.
For SRH, there were positives in the batting department, but the lack of control with the ball and early wickets cost them dearly.
As IPL 2026 unfolds, RCB have sent a strong message to the rest of the league—they are here not just to compete, but to dominate.
