Washington Sundar, the talented all-rounder from Tamil Nadu, has been added to Team India’s squad for the upcoming second Test against New Zealand. The match is set to take place at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune from October 24, 2023.
This addition comes after India faced a disappointing defeat in the first Test, losing by eight wickets, marking the first time in 36 years that they have been outplayed on home turf in a Test match.
Washington has been showcasing his skills in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25, where he has played a pivotal role for the Tamil Nadu team. In a standout performance against Delhi during the second round, he scored an impressive 152 runs and took two crucial wickets.

His recent form is expected to bolster the Indian squad, particularly in light of the struggles demonstrated in the previous Test, where Team India was bowled out for a mere 46 runs in the first innings, marking a significant collapse that saw the last six wickets fall for just 15 runs.
With a seasoned record of 77 wickets and 1888 runs in international cricket, Washington Sundar brings a wealth of experience and versatility to Team India. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a valuable asset, particularly in the lower order.
Furthermore, Sundar was an essential member of the historic Indian side that triumphed against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2021, securing a victory at the Gabba in Brisbane—the first defeat for the hosts at this venue in over three decades.
However, Washington’s selection for Team India comes at a cost for Tamil Nadu cricket, as it results in another significant exclusion from their Ranji squad. Earlier, captain R. Sai Kishore was called up to represent India A in the Emerging Asian Cup in Muscat, Oman, leaving the Tamil Nadu side looking to fill critical gaps left by their experienced players.
