India ended their World Test Championship 2021-2023 cycle as runners-up after the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side faced a disappointing loss against Australia by a massive 209 runs in the WTC Final. The Indian team ended up as runners-up for the second consecutive time after losing the first WTC Final to New Zealand in 2021. Australia took the driver’s seat from the first day of the ‘Ultimate Test’, and Indian team were no where in the game at any point of time.
After the shameful loss against Australia, Rohit Sharma’s captaincy has come onto the radar of critics. The five time IPL winning captain disappointed the fans with his poor captaincy. He seemed out of ideas and was constantly showed poor judgement of field placement during the game. Here are the players who can lead India in Test cricket after Rohit Sharma.
Ajinkya Rahane
Amidst the glamour and glitter of youthful Indian cricket, there is a quiet man of short stature who can lead India to win several big games in Test cricket. The 35-year-old Rahane is one of the best options who should be given a chance to lead the team. Ajinkya has played 83 Tests for India and was India’s highest run scorer in the WTC Final 2023. Not only this, but Rahane has also led India in six Test matches winning four of them. He led Indian team to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy win two consecutive times along with Virat Kohli.
Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin, who is one of the most experienced players in the Indian team having played 92 Test matches and taken 474 wickets, can also replace Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain. He carries a wealth of knowledge and experience that he can bring to the role of India’s captain. Regarded as one of the best Test bowlers in the world, Ashwin has captained India A and Kings XI Punjab in the IPL. The skills, knowledge, and experience he carries will surely help him if he is given the opportunity to lead the Indian Test team.
Rishabh Pant
The other name that could become India’s next Test captain is none other than Rishabh Pant. The Delhi-based player made his Test debut in 2018, and since then has brought laurels to the country in the longest format. Pant, who is recovering from the fatal car accident that he faced in December last year has already captained Delhi in domestic cricket as well as Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. Not only this but since Pant is a wicketkeeper, he has the capability to read the game well, which makes him a prime contender to lead India in the longest format once he makes a comeback post-recovery.
