Amazon Prime Video/Sony to bid in partenership to get the IPL Broadcasting Rights?
According to the sources, Sony pictures network and Amazon prime videos can jointly bid for the media rights of the IPL for the next 5 years. The auction is said to be held in December by the Board of Control for cricket in India. They are expected to put up our use bit of around three to four billion dollars for the auction. Sony pictures network held the broadcasting rights were the IPL from 2008 till 2017 before Star Sports network took over.

Star Sports India has a strong presence in linear television and in the digital streaming space through Disney hotstar. Like Star Sports India ,the Sony pictures networks has also linear television network but it does not as any prominent online segment. This is the golden opportunity for the Sony Pictures network to shake hands with Amazon Prime . Reports also suggest that Sony pictures network can also tie up with Zee Network to form 2 tier or 3 tier market. Amazon Prime is trying hard to fetch the broadcasting rights of the IPL but has not been successful.

“Prime Video has been looking to get into this space for a long time now and Sony wants to win the rights back. It looks like both may join hands for the same,” said another source.
While Sony did not respond to BusinessLine’s query, an Amazon spokesperson said it does “not comment on speculations.”
According to reports, BCCI expects at least $5 billion from broadcasting rights.
The Manchester United’s Glazers Family still in the hunt?
The senior official of the BCCI has confirmed that the Glazer family, which owns Manchester United team, has picked up the bid document as October 20 was the last day.
“Yes, the Glazers have picked up the bid document. Obviously, IPL is now a globally acknowledged sports property and international firms will be interested.
“Whether they would bid at all or whether they would be later interested in buying stakes in an existing IPL team, we don’t know,” the BCCI official said.

The former Indian cricketer might join hands with one of consortiums as a minority stakeholder with his investment.
“Yes, a very well known cricketer has shown active interest in being a part of the new franchises. Yes, he wants to invest his own money and be a part of the consortium.
“He wants to be a minority stake-holder but with his experience, he would want to take the cricketing decisions. Whether any of the new business houses will agree to such a proposal remains to be seen,” the source confirmed.
A US based company, Red birds capitals which is is one of the investors of the the Liverpool Football team in the English Premier League. It has the 15% stake in the Rajasthan Royals franchise and also wants to invest in the broadcasting rights of the IPL for the next five years.
