The BCCI and ECB will try to rearrange the the 5th match at Old Trafford which was cancelled. The game may occur next year when Indian team will travel to England for the white ball series.
The match was cancelled because many of the Indian players had fears of of further increase in the number of of positive cases within the camp as stated by the the ECB.
Why did the India-England Test didn’t went ahead?
BCCI at 10:30 issued a statement, ” In lieu of these strong relationship between the ECB and BCCI, the BCCI has offered to ECB A Rescheduling of the cancelled test match. Both boards will work towards finding a window to reschedule this test match”.

When will the India vs England 5th Test Match be now played?
The reschedule match will be the stand alone match rather than the full 5 match series. It clearly means that the the outcome of the series what is stay with India as 2-1. It is yet to be confirmed that there will be no impact on the WTC points table with the scheduling of the match.
On the Thursday, there were discussions going on between ECB and BCCI throughout the night to find a way to get the test match between India and England. England suggested that the game could start by the delay of one or two days.

The World Test Championship rules allow teams to cancel or not to play a match if Covid can make a significant impact on their ability to pick a side. It was difficult for the Indian side to pick there 11 as they had 20 members in the team who have been in contact with the virus.

If the England cricket board accept the series as a 4 match series with the points work out on percentage basis. The window for the rescheduled match is unclear but it is expected to take place when Indian team will travel to England for the white ball series in July next year.
England will play a series of three test matches against New Zealand and three test matches against South Africa in the next summer. India will travel to England for a ODI series and T20 Series both having three matches each. So possibly a test match could be added in between to complete the series.
There were some reports that Indian squad were concerned that the covid cases inside the Indian camp can disturb the the IPL which begins on 19 September. The England team face the similar situation last year when they cancelled the ODI series against South Africa in South Africa after 7 positive cases were found inside the bubble including two players. The ECB and the South African cricket board have agreed to reschedule the series at later date.
