In a remarkable year for Saint Lucia, the nation has not only celebrated its first Olympic Gold but has also made waves in the cricketing world by securing the Caribbean Premier League [CPL] trophy in 2024.

The Saint Lucia Kings achieved a historic victory in CPL against the defending champions, the Guyana Amazon Warriors, in a riveting final held at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on October 6.

At the halfway mark of their innings, the Kings seemed on the brink of defeat, requiring over 13 runs per over. Roston Chase was stranded on a modest 14 runs off 15 balls, while Aaron Jones, the T20 star from the USA, was even more troubled at 10 runs off 19 deliveries.

Kings’ skipper Faf du Plessis had intended to substitute Jones for David Wiese after one more over. However, in a spectacular turnaround, Jones and Chase unleashed a barrage of runs, turning the tide in their favor.

The pivotal moment came during Moeen Ali’s over, where the duo amassed a staggering 27 runs. With newfound confidence, they continued to demolish the bowling attack, scoring 20 runs in the next over and 18 in the 18th, bringing their total to an astonishing 65 runs in just three overs. The momentum shifted dramatically, with the Warriors’ hopes of winning quickly evaporating as they struggled to contain the onslaught.

Daren Sammy’s motivating words after the 15th over seemed to ignite a fire within the team, propelling them from the brink of despair to an unforgettable victory. This triumph marks not only the first CPL title for the Kings, a franchise linked to the Punjab Kings in the IPL, but also a significant milestone for cricket in Saint Lucia.
