AMIR

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has confirmed that he will not register for the IPL 2027 auction, despite recently acquiring British citizenship. The 33-year-old left-arm pacer has dismissed speculation about a possible entry into the world’s richest T20 league, making it clear that he has no plans to pursue an IPL contract.

The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled to take place on December 16 in Goa. Amir’s British citizenship had generated speculation about his potential participation, considering the long-standing restrictions on Pakistani players featuring in the tournament.

However, responding to a query , Amir confirmed his decision in a brief message from Dubai.

“No, I’m not [registering for the auction],” Amir said.

British Citizenship Raised Possibility of IPL Entry

Amir’s decision is noteworthy because Pakistani cricketers have not been part of the IPL since its inaugural season in 2008. Players from Pakistan have effectively remained outside the tournament, making Amir’s acquisition of British citizenship a subject of interest.

With his new citizenship, there was speculation that he could explore the possibility of entering the auction as a UK-based player.

A similar precedent exists in the case of former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who featured in the IPL for several seasons while holding a British passport.

Amir could potentially have followed a similar route. However, even eligibility to register would not have guaranteed him a place in an IPL squad, as franchises would still have had to bid for his services.

Amir Could Have Registered Through ECB

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday that overseas players interested in participating in the IPL auction could register through their respective cricket boards.

The registration window is scheduled to remain open until November 23.

Since Amir has acquired British citizenship and is treated as a domestic player in England, he could have explored registration through the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

His experience in international cricket and franchise T20 competitions could have made him an interesting name in the auction pool. Nevertheless, the former Pakistan pacer has decided against pursuing the opportunity.

Mohammad Amir’s International Career

Amir represented Pakistan in 159 international matches across all three formats. His career included:

  • Tests: 36 matches
  • ODIs: 61 matches
  • T20Is: 62 matches
  • International wickets: 271 across formats

The left-arm pacer was known for his ability to generate swing, particularly with the new ball. He played an important role in Pakistan’s international campaigns and was part of the team that won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.

His performances in major international matches established him as one of Pakistan’s prominent fast-bowling talents of his generation.

Amir Registers for Afghanistan Premier League Draft

Although Amir has ruled out the IPL, he remains active in the franchise cricket circuit. On Monday, he registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) player draft as a UK national.

He has also represented Trent Rockets in The Hundred, featuring as a local player rather than an overseas recruit for the Nottingham-based franchise.

His participation in these competitions highlights his continued involvement in T20 cricket despite stepping away from international representation.

For now, the IPL 2027 auction will take place without Amir’s name in the registration pool. His decision brings an end to speculation about a possible return to the Indian franchise league, while his future remains linked to opportunities in other domestic and franchise competitions.
