BOUCHER

Mark Boucher has been appointed as the new head coach of MI Emirates ahead of the upcoming International League T20 (ILT20) season. The former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter returns to the Mumbai Indians family in another coaching role, replacing Robin Singh at the UAE-based franchise.

Robin Singh guided MI Emirates to their first ILT20 title in 2024, helping the team establish itself as one of the competition’s leading sides. Boucher will now take charge as the franchise looks to build on its recent performances and challenge for another championship.

Boucher is already familiar with the MI setup. He served as head coach of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. His association with the franchise continued after that, when he took charge of MI New York in Major League Cricket.

His stint in the United States proved particularly successful. Boucher guided MI New York to the MLC title in 2024, adding another major achievement to his coaching career.

Boucher Returns to MI Family

The appointment gives Boucher another opportunity to work within the Mumbai Indians ecosystem. Having already coached the IPL side and MI New York, he will now be responsible for MI Emirates in one of the fastest-growing T20 leagues.

His familiarity with the franchise’s structure and approach could help him settle quickly into the new role. Boucher also brings experience of working with international players in different T20 competitions, an important factor in a league where squads feature cricketers from several countries.

The move also comes at an important stage for MI Emirates. The franchise has already tasted success in the ILT20 and remains among the teams capable of challenging for the title.

MI Emirates Fell Short in 2025-26 Final

MI Emirates entered the 2025-26 season with the experience of having won the competition in 2024. They again reached the final but could not complete another title-winning campaign.

The team finished runners-up after losing the final to Desert Vipers. The result will give Boucher a clear objective heading into his first season in charge: take the side one step further and bring the ILT20 trophy back to MI Emirates.

Replacing a coach who delivered the franchise’s first major title will also bring its own expectations. Robin Singh’s contribution remains an important part of the team’s history, but the franchise has now opted for a new direction with Boucher.

A Coach With T20 Success

Boucher comes into the role with considerable experience across franchise cricket.

After a distinguished playing career with South Africa, he moved into coaching and gradually established himself in different T20 competitions. His work with Mumbai Indians gave him experience of handling a high-profile IPL dressing room, while his role with MI New York added another title to his coaching record.

The 2024 MLC campaign was particularly significant. Under Boucher, MI New York won the championship, demonstrating his ability to manage a franchise team through a tournament and deliver results at the business end of the competition.

His next challenge will be in the UAE, where conditions can be different and teams have to adapt quickly during the ILT20 season.

What Boucher Brings to MI Emirates

Boucher’s biggest advantage will be his familiarity with the demands of modern T20 cricket. Franchise leagues require coaches to work with players from different cricketing backgrounds while maintaining a clear tactical approach.

His experience with Mumbai Indians also means that he understands the wider MI philosophy. That familiarity could make the transition smoother as he begins working with the Emirates squad.

The appointment could also provide continuity within the broader Mumbai Indians franchise network. Boucher has already worked with MI players and staff in other competitions, and his return keeps an experienced coach within the franchise’s global T20 structure.

For MI Emirates, however, the focus will ultimately remain on performance.

After reaching the final in the 2025-26 season, the team will be aiming to go one step further. Boucher will therefore begin his tenure with a squad that already has experience of competing deep into the tournament.

New Chapter for MI Emirates

The arrival of Mark Boucher marks a new phase for MI Emirates. Robin Singh helped deliver the franchise’s first ILT20 title, while Boucher now inherits a team with established expectations and recent final experience.

His record with MI New York and his previous role with Mumbai Indians will add considerable interest to the appointment.

With the next ILT20 season approaching, Boucher’s immediate task will be to build his coaching setup, assess the squad and prepare the team for another title challenge.

After winning the championship in 2024 and finishing runners-up in 2025-26, MI Emirates will now hope Boucher can help them turn another strong campaign into a trophy-winning season.
