Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the BCCI selection committee appears to be coming to an end, with his contract set to expire on October 4. Although the formal announcement is still awaited, developments in Guwahati suggest that the former India all-rounder is unlikely to continue in the role.

Agarkar was notably absent from the selection committee meeting held in Guwahati on Tuesday. His absence has added to speculation surrounding the transition, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is understood to have already worked out an interim arrangement for the selection panel.

For now, the situation remains fluid. The temporary arrangement could continue for some time, depending on when the BCCI finalises Agarkar’s replacement. However, Pragyan Ojha has emerged as the immediate candidate to lead the committee.

Pragyan Ojha Emerges as Interim Choice

Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is understood to have been asked to take charge of the selection committee, at least for the time being. Ojha is currently the senior-most member of the four-member panel when measured by Test appearances.

Ojha played 24 Tests for India, putting him ahead of his fellow selectors in terms of international experience. SS Das follows with 23 Tests, while RP Singh played 14 Tests and Ajay Ratra featured in six.

This experience could make Ojha the natural choice to handle the chairman’s responsibilities during the transition. However, his appointment may not necessarily be permanent.

A major portion of the Test squad is reportedly expected to consist of players who were involved in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England last year. Gautam Gambhir Also Present in Guwahati

India head coach Gautam Gambhir was also in Guwahati for the ongoing ODI series. He may have been involved in discussions surrounding the upcoming assignments, although the exact details of the meeting have not been officially disclosed.

The selection process for the New Zealand tour is believed to have progressed significantly. Most of the players are understood to have already been shortlisted, meaning the change in the chairman’s position may not dramatically affect the immediate squad planning.

Pandya has been ruled out of the India A squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia A in Puducherry. The matches are scheduled to begin on October 6, just two days after Agarkar’s contract formally ends.

The selectors are believed to have identified a replacement for Pandya. However, it remains unclear whether the BCCI will announce the change immediately or wait until after October 4.
