Ahead of the first Test against West Indies in Barbados starting June 25, Australia has announced notable changes to its playing XI. Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the squad, and Steven Smith has been ruled out due to injury, paving the way for new players to make their debut.

Marnus Labuschagne, a key figure in Australia’s batting lineup, has been sidelined after a lean run in recent Test matches. Despite being moved to open the batting for the WTC final, Labuschagne managed scores of 17 and 22, continuing a two-year decline in form. The selectors opted to give him a break, emphasizing their support for his development.

“Labuschagne at his best can be a really important member of this team,” said chair of selectors George Bailey. “We will continue working with him on the areas of his game he needs to rediscover.”

In Smith’s absence, Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis have been named as replacements. Konstas, earning his third Test cap, has not featured since his debut against India at the MCG, where he scored a quickfire 60. Inglis, who scored a century on his debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year, offers a potent batting option.

Steven Smith suffered a compound dislocation to his right little finger while fielding at Lord’s. Although he avoided surgery, he must wear a splint for eight weeks. Bailey confirmed that Smith’s recovery is ongoing, with hopes he might return later in the series. “Steve needs more time for the wound to heal,” Bailey said.

The final team composition is yet to be confirmed, but Konstas is expected to open with Usman Khawaja. Depending on pitch conditions, Australia might opt for two frontline spinners, with Matt Kuhnemann joining Nathan Lyon in the bowling attack. The upcoming Test promises a fresh look for Australia as they aim to bounce back in the series.
