Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Pollard, who served as the franchise’s batting coach for the previous four IPL seasons, takes over from Mahela Jayawardene, who parted ways with the five-time champions last weekend.
The appointment marks a significant step in Pollard’s coaching career as he moves into his first head coach role. Having spent more than a decade representing Mumbai Indians as a player before joining the coaching staff, the 39-year-old brings extensive knowledge of the franchise’s culture, playing philosophy and expectations.
From Star Player to Head Coach
Pollard’s association with Mumbai Indians began in 2010, when the franchise signed him as a player. Over the years, he became one of the most influential members of the team, playing a key role in its success across multiple IPL campaigns.
He was part of all five of Mumbai Indians’ IPL title-winning teams in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also contributed to their Champions League Twenty20 triumphs in 2011 and 2013.
Pollard retired from playing in the IPL ahead of the 2023 season and subsequently joined the coaching staff as batting coach. After four seasons in that position, he has now been promoted to lead the team.
His appointment also provides continuity for Mumbai Indians, with a former player who understands the franchise’s environment taking charge of its cricketing operations.
Pollard’s Impressive IPL Record
During his IPL career, Pollard played 189 matches, scoring 3,412 runs at a strike rate of 147.32. He also claimed 69 wickets, demonstrating his value as a powerful middle-order batter and a useful bowling option.
His ability to change the course of a match with aggressive batting made him a central figure in Mumbai Indians’ successful years. His experience in high-pressure situations could now prove valuable as he guides the team’s players from the dugout.
Pollard last featured as a player in the IPL in 2022 before transitioning into coaching.
Pollard Reacts to His Appointment
Pollard expressed his pride at taking charge of a franchise that has played a major role in his professional career.
“It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians,” Pollard said in a statement.
He highlighted the strong connection he shares with the team, its players and its supporters, popularly known as the Paltan. Having experienced the franchise from both sides—as a player and a coach—he said he understood the responsibility associated with representing Mumbai Indians.
Pollard also outlined his priorities for the new role, including working closely with players and support staff, developing young talent and building on the team’s legacy.
He will now be expected to help Mumbai Indians prepare for IPL 2027 and maintain their competitiveness in a tournament where the franchise has historically enjoyed considerable success.
Nita Ambani Welcomes Pollard as Head Coach
Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani welcomed the appointment, highlighting Pollard’s long-standing relationship with the franchise.
She recalled that Pollard joined the team as a 22-year-old and had become an integral part of the Mumbai Indians family over the following 16 years.
Ambani praised his contributions as a player and his continued commitment as a coach. She also expressed confidence that he would bring the same determination and understanding of the franchise to his new position.
According to Ambani, Pollard understands what it means to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey and represent the Paltan, making him a familiar figure to players and supporters alike.

Experience Across Global T20 Leagues
Pollard’s experience extends beyond the IPL. He has represented Mumbai Indians’ sister franchises across several international T20 competitions, including Major League Cricket, the ILT20 and the SA20.
He continued playing franchise cricket in 2026, turning out for MI New York in the MLC and Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. Earlier in October, Joburg Super Kings signed him at the SA20 player auction for the 2027 season.
His continued involvement in T20 cricket allows him to remain connected to the evolving strategies and demands of the format.
Retention Decisions Will Be Pollard’s First Challenge
Pollard’s immediate priority will be to work with the franchise management to finalise player retentions ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, scheduled to take place in Goa in December.
The retention process will be crucial in determining Mumbai Indians’ squad composition and identifying the areas that require strengthening before the new season.
With a new head coach at the helm, the franchise will look to build a competitive squad while maintaining the core principles that have contributed to its five IPL titles.
For Pollard, the challenge is clear: translate his experience as one of Mumbai Indians’ most successful players into effective leadership and guide the franchise into its next chapter.
