Jonathan Trott, a former England international, has been coaching the Afghanistan national team for almost two years. Despite not having visited the country due to security concerns, Jonathan Trott has been instrumental in the team’s rise to prominence in international cricket. In an exclusive interview, Jonathan Trott shared his thoughts on the team’s progress, their unique challenges, and his approach to coaching.
As the team prepares to face Papua New Guinea in their next match, Jonathan Trott emphasized the importance of staying focused on their goals. “We’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us,” he said. “It’s just about the guys keeping their feet on the ground and not getting too carried away.” With Afghanistan’s best net run rate (5.225) in the tournament, a win against PNG would effectively seal their place in the Super 8s.

Jonathan Trott’s coaching style has been praised by the players, who have responded well to his guidance. “I want them to sit down together for an hour and realise they are creating history for other players,” he said. “I want them to feel proud of what they’re achieving.”
This sentiment is reflected in their recent 84-run thrashing of New Zealand, where they cruised past Uganda in their opening game.
Jonathan Trott acknowledges that he still face few challenges:
Despite Afghanistan’s success, Trott acknowledges that they still face challenges. “The language barrier can occasionally pose problems,” he admitted. However, he believes that the team’s ability to adapt to different situations has been a major factor in their success. “We’ve got guys on the coaching staff who are amazed at how far our boys can hit the ball,” he said.
Trott’s unique experience as a coach has been shaped by his own playing career with England. He remembers watching footage of Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart being “absolutely clattered” on an uneven pitch during their tour of the Caribbean. This experience has informed his approach to coaching, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and resilience.

As Afghanistan continues to make waves in international cricket, Trott believes that their success is not just about individual talent, but also about the cultural and historical context in which they play.
“We’ve got guys who have grown up playing tape-ball and street cricket,” he said. “They’ve had to hit the ball hard just to get it to go anywhere.” This experience has given them a unique edge when it comes to playing with a hard ball.
With Afghanistan’s bowling attack led by spinners like Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi, Trott is confident that they have the right ingredients to succeed. “I don’t want to put a marker down,” he said, “but with the position we’re sitting in now, yes, I’d like to get out of the group stage.”
As Jonathan Trott continues to guide Afghanistan through this year’s T20 World Cup, his unique coaching style and approach will be crucial in helping them achieve their goals. With their best net run rate in the tournament, they are well-positioned to make a deep run in the competition.
