The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the appointment of Jay Shah as its new Chairman, effective December 1st. At just 35 years old, Shah becomes the youngest ICC Chairman in board’s history.
He succeeds Greg Barclay, who held the position for the past four years. Shah, a former Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been instrumental in shaping the future of Indian cricket.

What Does the ICC Chairman Do?
As the Chairman of ICC, Shah will be responsible for leading the governing body of international cricket. His duties will include overseeing the strategic direction of the organization, representing ICC on global platforms, and ensuring the growth and development of cricket worldwide.

He will also be responsible for chairing ICC’s Board meetings, setting agendas, and guiding the organization’s decisions.
Powers and Responsibilities
- As Chairman, Shah will have significant powers and responsibilities. He will be responsible for:
- Leading the ICC Board and ensuring that all decisions are taken in a transparent and democratic manner.
- Representing ICC on international platforms, including meetings with other cricket boards, sponsors, and stakeholders.
- Overseeing the development of cricket worldwide, including implementing policies and strategies to promote the growth of the game.
- Chairing ICC’s meetings with other international cricket boards, including the BCCI, to ensure that all decisions are taken in a collaborative manner.
Compensation and Tenure
The ICC Chairman does not receive a fixed salary. Instead, he is paid a stipend by the ICC, which is determined by the ICC’s Human Resources and Remuneration Committee. The tenure of the ICC Chairman is two years, with a maximum of six years.
Leadership and Governance
As Chairman, Shah will be responsible for providing leadership and guidance to ICC’s Board and staff. He will work closely with ICC’s CEO and other senior officials to ensure that the organization’s goals are achieved. Shah will also be responsible for maintaining good relations with ICC’s member boards and ensuring that their interests are represented.

Who Can Become an ICC Chairman?
To become an ICC Chairman, a candidate must have significant experience in cricket administration and must be nominated by at least one full member of ICC. The candidate must also have a good understanding of international cricket and be able to represent ICC on global platforms.
The final selection is made through a voting process by ICC’s Board, which consists of representatives from all full member boards.
