Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could make a significant decision ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, with young all-rounder Prashant Veer reportedly emerging as a potential release. The Uttar Pradesh cricketer was one of the franchise’s biggest investments at the previous auction, but his performances may not have fully justified the price tag.

CSK spent INR 14.2 crore each to secure Veer and wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma at the Abu Dhabi auction. However, with the December 16 mini-auction approaching, the franchise is understood to be considering ways to strengthen its purse by releasing some players.

While Sharma’s future is also not entirely certain, Veer appears to be more vulnerable following a relatively modest debut season.

Prashant Veer’s Performance Raises Questions

The 20-year-old left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder managed 90 runs in six matches, batting in five innings, and failed to take a wicket during the season. His highest score was 43, which came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Considering the INR 14.2 crore investment, his overall contribution may not have met the expectations attached to such a significant acquisition.

Kartik Sharma, meanwhile, enjoyed a more productive campaign. The 20-year-old Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batter scored 295 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32.77. His highest score was 71 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the second half of the season.

Those numbers represent a reasonable return for a middle-order batter, potentially strengthening his case for retention.

However, a CSK official indicated that the franchise has not yet taken a final decision on player retentions and releases.

CSK Could Release Veer and Attempt to Buy Him Back

Interestingly, CSK may not be looking to part ways with Prashant Veer permanently. One possibility under consideration is releasing the all-rounder to create additional funds and then attempting to purchase him again at a lower price during the mini-auction.

Such a move would allow the franchise to reassess his market value while retaining the possibility of bringing him back into the squad.

CSK currently have INR 2.4 crore remaining in their purse. With the annual salary-cap increase of INR 5 crore, their available purse is expected to rise to INR 7.4 crore.

Releasing players could provide the franchise with additional flexibility to address its squad requirements and compete more effectively at the auction.

The franchises have until November 15 to announce their retained and released players ahead of the mini-auction scheduled for December 16 in Goa.

Punjab Kings Dismiss Marco Jansen Trade Speculation

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have reportedly dismissed speculation surrounding a possible trade involving South African all-rounder Marco Jansen.

Recent reports had suggested that the franchise could consider moving on from the left-arm fast bowler. However, sources within PBKS have indicated that the team has no intention of trading him.

Jansen was acquired by Punjab Kings for INR 7 crore at the 2025 mega auction. Although his previous IPL season was underwhelming, his recent international performances have strengthened his position as an important player.

He picked up nine wickets in 12 matches last season, maintaining an economy rate above 10 and an average exceeding 50. His contribution with the bat was also limited, with just 51 runs in five innings.

Nevertheless, his performances in Test cricket have attracted considerable attention.

Marco Jansen Earns Praise After Australia Test Series

Jansen recently delivered an impressive performance in the three-Test series against Australia, where he was named Player of the Series. He has also reached the top of the ICC Test rankings for both bowlers and all-rounders.

Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn praised Jansen in a social media post, describing him as the best cricketer in the world.

While Test cricket rankings do not necessarily determine a player’s value in the T20 format, Jansen’s recent performances underline his growing importance in international cricket.

For Punjab Kings, retaining a player with his pace, left-arm angle and all-round capabilities could be a valuable long-term decision.

Two Franchises, Different Auction Strategies

The situations involving Prashant Veer and Marco Jansen highlight the different considerations franchises face ahead of the mini-auction.

CSK are reportedly evaluating their investment in Veer and exploring ways to create additional funds, while PBKS appear keen to retain Jansen despite his disappointing previous IPL campaign.

With the November 15 retention deadline approaching, the final decisions could significantly influence both franchises’ auction strategies for IPL 2027.
