The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially removed Nazmul Islam from his position as chairman of the board’s finance committee. The decision, announced on Thursday, follows a historic player-led boycott that brought professional cricket in the country to a standstill, halting both the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Dhaka Cricket League.

The crisis reached a breaking point on Thursday when two BPL fixtures—Chattogram Royals vs. Noakhali Express and Rajshahi Warriors vs. Sylhet Titans—were abandoned as teams refused to take the field for the toss.

Simultaneously, four Dhaka Cricket League matches were cancelled. The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) initiated the strike following “disparaging and disrespectful” remarks made by Islam regarding player earnings and the national team’s commitment.

The friction originated from Islam’s controversial comments suggesting that players should “return money” for poor performances and his labeling of former captain Tamim Iqbal as an “Indian agent.” These remarks came amid a tense standoff where the BCB has refused to play 2026 T20 World Cup matches in India, citing security concerns.

The BCB’s Response-

In a bid to restore order, BCB President Aminul Islam exercised authority under Article 31 of the BCB Constitution to strip Islam of his financial oversight.

The decision is aimed at ensuring the continued smooth and effective functioning of the Board’s affairs,” the BCB statement read.

While Islam has been removed as finance chief, he remains a BCB director pending a formal review. The President will serve as the acting chairman of the finance committee until further notice.

Despite the sacking, the boycott’s future remains uncertain. CWAB President Mohammad Mithun, supported by senior players like Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, argued that Islam’s removal from one committee is insufficient.

The players are demanding a total resignation from the board, seeking a written guarantee that Islam will have no further role in BCB governance.
