CONWAY

New Zealand have suffered another injury setback ahead of their ODI series against India, with opening batter Devon Conway ruled out of the first match after sustaining a concussion during a training session at Eden Park.

The incident took place on Tuesday when Conway collided with teammate Matt Henry while both players were attempting to take a catch. The two cricketers received immediate medical attention and underwent head injury assessments, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed.

While Henry’s condition is being monitored, Conway was taken to hospital for further medical examination. Subsequent assessments confirmed that the left-handed batter had suffered a concussion, ruling him out of the series opener.

Matt Henry Also Under Medical Observation

The collision has raised concerns over the availability of both players, particularly with Henry himself returning from an injury.

The New Zealand fast bowler missed the final three T20Is against India after suffering a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps. His fitness is now being monitored as the team prepares for the ODI series.

In its official statement, New Zealand Cricket confirmed that both players would remain under observation.

“Both players will continue to be monitored and their involvement in the ODI series against India will be updated in due course,” NZC said.

While Conway’s absence from the first ODI has been confirmed, Henry’s availability for the upcoming matches remains subject to further assessment.

New Zealand’s Injury Concerns Continue

Conway’s injury adds to New Zealand’s growing list of unavailable players ahead of the India ODIs. The visitors have already lost Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra, who were ruled out of the series because of injuries.

Chapman is recovering from a hamstring injury, while Ravindra has been sidelined with a shoulder problem.

These setbacks could force New Zealand to make further adjustments to their playing combination, particularly in the batting department. Conway’s experience at the top of the order makes his absence a significant concern for the visitors.

With multiple players facing fitness issues, the team management will be hoping for positive updates on Henry and the possibility of Conway returning later in the series.

India ODI Series Presents an Early Challenge

The ODI series against India is an important assignment for New Zealand, but the injury situation has complicated their preparations.

The team will now have to assess its available resources and identify suitable replacements or changes to the batting order before the opening match.

For Conway, the immediate priority will be recovery and following the necessary concussion protocols rather than rushing back into action. His participation in the remaining ODIs will depend on medical assessments and his progress during the recovery period.

New Zealand Cricket is expected to provide further updates on both Conway and Henry as the series approaches.
