Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than a decade and included several memorable performances across formats. The 38-year-old has now decided to step away from T20 Internationals, List A and first-class cricket after previously announcing his retirement from ODIs in June last year.

Although Maxwell will no longer represent Australia internationally, he is not walking away from the game completely. He will continue playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Melbourne Stars, with his current contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season.

Maxwell leaves international cricket as one of Australia’s most influential T20 batters, having built a reputation for aggressive stroke play, innovative shot-making and the ability to change a match within a few overs.

Maxwell Finishes as Australia’s Third-Highest T20I Run-Scorer

Maxwell ends his T20I career with 2,897 runs from 130 matches at an impressive strike rate of more than 154. He ranks third among Australia’s leading run-scorers in the format.

One of the biggest highlights of his T20I career was his record of five centuries. Maxwell shares the world record for the most T20I hundreds with India’s Rohit Sharma.

His ability to score quickly and dominate bowling attacks made him a key part of Australia’s white-ball setup for several years. He also played an important role in Australia’s T20 plans through multiple major tournaments.

Discussions About Retirement Began Before T20 World Cup

Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell revealed that conversations about his international future had been taking place for some time, both before and after the T20 World Cup.

He explained that the discussions with the Australian team management were open-ended, with no pressure being placed on him to make an immediate decision.

Australia had begun giving opportunities to younger players in preparation for the future. Maxwell pointed to the Bangladesh series, where several emerging players received opportunities and performed well.

The changing direction of the national team helped him understand that it was the right moment to step aside and allow the next generation to establish itself.

Maxwell Hoped for an MCG Farewell Game

Maxwell also admitted that he had briefly hoped to receive a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), particularly with England scheduled to visit Australia for a white-ball series that includes a T20I in Melbourne.

The MCG has been a special venue for Maxwell, and he described T20 cricket as a format that had felt like home throughout much of his career.

However, he acknowledged Australia’s need to prepare for the future, particularly with the 2028 Olympic Games approaching. The team management wants younger players to gain exposure to international cricket and experience pressure that cannot always be replicated in the BBL.

Maxwell understood the decision and accepted that the team’s long-term requirements had to take priority over an individual farewell appearance.

Focus Shifts to Fitness and Melbourne Stars

Another important factor behind Maxwell’s decision has been his physical condition. The Australian all-rounder has been managing a knee issue and revealed that he was preparing for another period of rehabilitation to ensure he could continue playing at the franchise level.

He explained that he was ready to undergo a knee injection and complete around eight weeks of rehabilitation to regain strength ahead of the upcoming BBL season.

With only a few tournaments remaining in his playing career, Maxwell wants to invest more time in his fitness and ensure that his body can withstand the demands of professional cricket.

His continued association with Melbourne Stars will give fans an opportunity to watch him in the BBL, where he remains an important figure.

T20 World Cup Against Oman Marks His Final International Appearance

Maxwell’s final appearance for Australia came against Oman in February during the T20 World Cup. It was Australia’s final group-stage match in a campaign that ended with an early exit from the tournament.

Although he would have preferred a farewell appearance at his home ground, Maxwell has chosen to close his international career on his own terms.

His retirement marks the end of an important chapter in Australian cricket. Known for his explosive batting, versatility and match-winning ability, Maxwell leaves behind a significant legacy in the shortest format.

For now, his attention will turn towards Melbourne Stars and the remaining years of his professional playing career.
