Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the first two matches of India A’s multi-day series against New Zealand A after suffering a left-side strain during the Irani Cup. Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra has been named as his replacement for the opening two fixtures, while Pant’s availability for the third match will be assessed at a later stage.
Pant sustained the injury while captaining Rest of India in the Irani Cup. His selection for the New Zealand A series, which forms part of India’s preparations for the upcoming Test assignment, had been subject to fitness clearance.
His absence means India A captain Dhruv Jurel will take on the primary wicketkeeping responsibilities in the first two matches. Kushagra, who has been included as an additional wicketkeeping option, will provide further depth to the squad.
Kumar Kushagra Earns Opportunity After Strong Red-Ball Form
The inclusion of Kushagra comes at a time when the young wicketkeeper-batter has been producing impressive performances in first-class cricket.
The 21-year-old has scored two centuries in his last three first-class appearances. His recent run includes a hundred in the Duleep Trophy final and another century against Australia A in Puducherry.
These performances have strengthened his case for selection and given him an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the India A setup. The upcoming matches in New Zealand will provide another test of his ability in challenging overseas conditions.
For Kushagra, the call-up represents an opportunity to make an impression in a series that carries significance for several players looking to strengthen their claims for higher honours.

India A Series to Prepare Players for New Zealand Tests
The three-match series against New Zealand A is an important part of India’s preparation for the upcoming two-Test series between the senior sides. With several players who have featured regularly in Test cricket included in the India A squad, the fixtures are expected to offer valuable match practice in red-ball conditions.
The opening match will be played in Lincoln on October 24, followed by the second game in Christchurch on October 31. The final match is scheduled to take place in Lincoln on November 7.
The series will give India’s players an opportunity to adapt to New Zealand conditions before the senior team’s Test assignment, which will be important to India’s ambitions in the World Test Championship.
Pant’s absence is a setback for India A, given his experience and importance as a wicketkeeper-batter. However, the team has retained depth in the position through Jurel and Kushagra.
Jurel, who has been appointed captain and wicketkeeper, will be expected to lead from the front while managing his responsibilities behind the stumps. Kushagra’s recent century-making form adds another option for the selectors during the opening two matches.
