Arunachal Pradesh have been deemed to have forfeited their opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy Plate division against Nagaland, with the scheduled contest at Ahmedabad called off ahead of the start of the domestic season. The team will also miss its opening fixture in the CK Nayudu Trophy, highlighting the ongoing administrative problems affecting cricket in the northeastern state.

The Ranji Trophy match was scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 11, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) that the match would not take place.

The disruption extends beyond the senior domestic competition. Arunachal Pradesh’s opening CK Nayudu Trophy fixture against Meghalaya, scheduled to start on October 12, has also been cancelled. Their next match in the same competition, against Manipur, was due to take place at the MCA Cricket Ground in Shillong.

BCCI Confirms Cancellation of Opening Matches

According to the information provided to the GCA, an official from the BCCI’s Cricket Operations team communicated the decision to cancel Arunachal Pradesh’s opening fixtures in both tournaments.

GCA officials subsequently informed the Nagaland team, which was already based in Ahmedabad, on Saturday evening. The visiting side was told that the match would not be held and that further information regarding upcoming fixtures would be communicated in due course.

A member of the Nagaland team confirmed the development, saying the team had been informed by a GCA official that Sunday’s match at the Narendra Modi Stadium would not go ahead. The team member also indicated that no additional details were available at that stage.

Ahmedabad has served as Arunachal Pradesh’s home venue for domestic cricket over the past few years. However, the absence of a selected team and the failure to organise the usual preparatory camp have left the state unable to begin its domestic campaign as scheduled.

CK Nayudu Trophy Fixtures Also Affected

The problems are not limited to the Ranji Trophy. Arunachal Pradesh are also set to miss their opening matches in the CK Nayudu Trophy, the domestic competition for under-23 cricketers.

Their first game against Meghalaya, scheduled for October 12, has been cancelled. The team’s subsequent fixture against Manipur, which was due to be played in Shillong, has also been called off.

Arunachal Pradesh were scheduled to face Nagaland in their second CK Nayudu Trophy match at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Anand from October 19. The status of their upcoming fixtures remains uncertain, with the BCCI expected to communicate further decisions in due course.

The cancellations mean players from the state could lose valuable opportunities to compete at the start of the domestic season. For younger cricketers in particular, the absence of competitive matches can affect their development and chances of attracting attention from selectors.

Cricket Administration Dispute Behind the Crisis

The situation stems from an ongoing dispute over elections to the Arunachal Cricket Association (ARCA). The matter has reached the courts, with the Gauhati High Court hearing the case and reserving its verdict.

In the absence of a recognised cricket administration capable of completing the necessary preparations, the state has been unable to organise its teams for the current domestic season.

The usual training camp in Ahmedabad has not taken place, and no squad has been selected for the opening fixtures. These administrative difficulties have now translated into missed matches across two major domestic competitions.

The uncertainty surrounding the association’s leadership has therefore created a serious challenge for cricket operations in Arunachal Pradesh. Until the dispute is resolved and the necessary arrangements are made, the state’s participation in the ongoing season remains uncertain.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Difficult Ranji Trophy Record

Arunachal Pradesh have faced challenges on the field as well. The team lost all five of its matches in the Ranji Trophy Plate division last season.

Their overall record in the competition also reflects the difficulties they have encountered. Across 41 Ranji Trophy matches, Arunachal Pradesh have registered just one victory, which came against Bihar in 2022.

Despite those results, participation in domestic tournaments remains important for the state’s players, offering them opportunities to gain experience and improve their performances against teams from other regions.

The latest cancellations now threaten to disrupt that process before the season has properly begun.

Uncertainty Over the Road Ahead

The immediate priority is to establish clarity over Arunachal Pradesh’s participation in the remaining fixtures. The BCCI has indicated that further information about future matches will be communicated later.

However, the wider issue remains the unresolved dispute over the Arunachal Cricket Association’s elections. Without a functioning and recognised administrative structure to oversee team selection and preparations, organising the state’s domestic campaign will remain difficult.

For Nagaland, the cancellation means the scheduled season opener will not take place as planned. For Arunachal Pradesh, the consequences extend further, with players across senior and under-23 cricket facing uncertainty over when they will next compete.

The episode highlights how administrative disputes can directly affect domestic cricket, leaving players and teams caught in circumstances beyond their control.
