Hardik Pandya’s latest injury setback has been confirmed to involve his right shin bone, although there is no fracture or structural bone damage. The India all-rounder has been ruled out of the upcoming India A one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry, while his availability for India’s white-ball tour of New Zealand next month remains uncertain.

According to information reported by Cricbuzz, Hardik has suffered a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response. Importantly, medical assessments have found no established stress fracture. Such bone stress injuries can generally require around four to six weeks of recovery, although the exact timeline can vary depending on the individual’s response to treatment and rehabilitation.

The latest development is another setback for Hardik, who has been attempting to make his way back to competitive cricket after being out of action since the IPL.

Hardik Ruled Out of Australia A Series

Hardik had been named as a conditional selection for India A’s three 50-over matches against Australia A in Puducherry. The games are scheduled for October 6, 9 and 11.

The all-rounder was expected to use the series as an important opportunity to regain match fitness after his extended absence. However, the fresh shin problem means he will not be able to take part in the series.

His selection had already been subject to fitness clearance from the medical team. With the injury now confirmed, Hardik will instead begin another period of rest and rehabilitation.

The development is particularly frustrating because he had been working towards a return to competitive cricket after spending considerable time at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

No Fracture, But Recovery Will Take Time

The positive aspect of the latest assessment is that Hardik does not have a fracture or structural damage to the bone. However, a tibial bone stress response still requires careful management.

The medical team at the Centre of Excellence has currently advised Hardik to take two weeks of rest. His progress after that period will determine how quickly he can resume his rehabilitation and eventually return to cricket.

A rushed comeback would carry its own risks, particularly considering the number of injury interruptions Hardik has experienced in recent years. As a result, his return is likely to be managed cautiously.

The absence of a structural fracture also means the situation is not necessarily as serious as a confirmed stress fracture, but the recovery period could still extend over several weeks.

New Zealand Tour Remains Uncertain

India are scheduled to play 10 white-ball matches in New Zealand beginning later in October. The tour includes five T20Is from October 22 to November 1, followed by three ODIs from November 4 to 15.

Hardik’s participation in the T20I series remains uncertain at this stage. His chances of featuring in the ODI leg could be even more difficult given the recovery timeline involved, although no final decision has been made.

Sources close to Hardik have indicated that the all-rounder is keen to return to action as soon as possible. However, his immediate priority will be completing the recovery process and regaining sufficient fitness before returning to match conditions.

For India, his availability could have a major bearing on their white-ball combination.

Hardik’s Long Absence Continues

Hardik’s latest setback extends his period away from competitive cricket. He featured in 10 of Mumbai Indians’ 14 matches during this year’s IPL but has not played competitive cricket since the tournament.

His most recent T20I appearance came in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad in March. His last ODI appearance was in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025.

The gap between competitive appearances has therefore become a significant factor in determining his next return.

Hardik was also expected to make a comeback earlier this year. He had been in contention for India’s ODI series against Afghanistan, but a quadriceps strain sustained during his rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence disrupted those plans.

That injury kept him out for longer, and the latest shin problem has now created another hurdle.

Gautam Gambhir Stresses Importance of Game Time

India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently highlighted how important Hardik remains to the team’s white-ball plans.

Gambhir pointed out that Hardik offers a rare combination of batting and bowling ability, particularly because he can provide a substantial number of overs while also contributing in the middle order.

However, Gambhir also stressed that simply selecting Hardik for a particular format would not be enough. The all-rounder needs sufficient game time before returning to major international assignments.

The India coach noted that Hardik had not played much cricket since the IPL and suggested that T20 cricket could potentially help him regain match rhythm before moving into the 50-over format.

That game-time factor could now become even more important following the latest injury.

India Face a Waiting Game

Hardik’s situation will be closely monitored over the coming weeks. The immediate plan involves rest, followed by further assessment and rehabilitation.

His absence from the Australia A series means he will lose a valuable opportunity to build match fitness. Whether he can make the New Zealand T20I series will depend largely on how his right shin responds to treatment and when he is cleared to resume cricket-related activities.

The timing also presents a challenge because India have a busy white-ball schedule ahead. With the T20Is in New Zealand beginning on October 22 and the ODIs following in November, Hardik has limited time to recover, train and regain competitive rhythm.

For now, there is no indication that his international comeback has been ruled out altogether. But after another injury interruption, India and Hardik will have to take a cautious approach to ensure that his next return is sustainable.

The latest setback may have ruled him out of the immediate Australia A assignment, but the bigger question will be whether Hardik can recover in time to play a meaningful role in India’s upcoming white-ball commitments.
