McDERMOTT

Pakistan have suffered an unexpected setback ahead of a busy international schedule, with fielding coach Shane McDermott stepping down from his role with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

McDermott, who was appointed as Pakistan’s all-format fielding coach just a year ago, has resigned while currently in Australia. The PCB has not disclosed the reason behind his departure, and no official explanation has been provided by either the board or the coach.

The decision has reportedly come as a surprise within Pakistan’s cricket setup, especially with the national team preparing for an important Test tour of the West Indies and the Asian Games later this year.

Sudden Exit Ahead of Busy Calendar

McDermott was expected to remain part of Pakistan’s coaching staff for the upcoming Asian Games in September, making his resignation particularly unexpected.

Pakistan’s Test squad is due to depart for the West Indies later this week, where it will play a tour match followed by a two-Test series. The PCB must now decide whether to appoint a replacement immediately or redistribute fielding responsibilities within the existing support staff.

As of now, no successor has been announced.

One Year with Pakistan

The Australian coach joined Pakistan in 2025 as the team’s all-format fielding coach, replacing Mohammad Masroor.

His first assignment came during Pakistan’s three-match T20I series in Bangladesh in July 2025.

Although his tenure lasted only around a year, McDermott was credited with bringing renewed energy to Pakistan’s fielding programme. Training sessions under his guidance featured higher-intensity drills, greater emphasis on athleticism, and improved match-simulation exercises aimed at raising fielding standards across formats.

While Pakistan’s on-field performances remained inconsistent, the coaching staff continued to prioritise improvements in fitness and fielding.

Experienced Fielding Specialist

McDermott has built a strong reputation as a specialist fielding coach through his work with several international teams.

Before joining Pakistan, he spent three years with Bangladesh as assistant fielding coach before serving in a similar role with Sri Lanka for another three years.

His extensive experience across Asian conditions made him a valuable addition to Pakistan’s coaching setup, particularly as the PCB looked to modernise its training methods.

His resignation now leaves another vacancy within Pakistan’s support staff during an important phase of the international calendar.

Pakistan’s Long Search for Fielding Stability

Pakistan have seen frequent changes in the fielding coach’s position over the past several years.

The team’s best fielding standards arguably came during Mickey Arthur’s first tenure as head coach, when former Australian coach Steve Rixon transformed Pakistan into one of the sharper fielding units in international cricket.

Rixon’s partnership with Arthur placed heavy emphasis on fitness, agility and discipline, leading to a noticeable improvement in Pakistan’s overall fielding performances.

However, after Rixon’s departure in 2018, maintaining those standards proved difficult.

Since then, Grant Bradburn, Aftab Khan, Abdul Majeed, Mohammad Masroor and Shane McDermott have all served in the role at different stages, highlighting the lack of long-term continuity in the department.

Despite periodic improvements, Pakistan have continued to struggle with dropped catches, inconsistent ground fielding and lapses under pressure.

PCB Faces Fresh Challenge

McDermott’s resignation comes at a challenging time for the PCB, with Pakistan entering a packed international schedule across all formats.

The immediate priority will be ensuring the coaching staff remains fully prepared before the team’s departure for the West Indies, where Pakistan will begin a crucial Test series.

The board must also decide whether to appoint a permanent replacement or rely on interim arrangements until after the upcoming assignments.

Fielding has increasingly become one of the defining factors in modern international cricket, making the appointment of a specialist coach an important decision for Pakistan’s management.

Uncertainty Ahead

For now, the circumstances surrounding McDermott’s resignation remain unclear.

Neither the coach nor the PCB has publicly explained the reasons behind his decision, leaving speculation over the timing of his exit.

What is certain, however, is that Pakistan will head into an important phase of the season without one of their key support staff members.

With challenging tours and major tournaments on the horizon, the PCB will be keen to fill the vacancy quickly and ensure the team’s preparations continue without disruption.
