BANGLADESH

Bangladesh have appointed Towhid Hridoy as captain for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe after regular skipper Litton Kumar Das was granted leave to participate in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 15-member squad on Wednesday, with the return of all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain and middle-order batter Yasir Ali among the notable inclusions.

The series, scheduled to be played in Bulawayo on July 15, 17, and 19, presents Bangladesh with an opportunity to test new combinations and strengthen their squad depth ahead of future international assignments.

Towhid Hridoy Gets First Major Leadership Assignment

The appointment of Towhid Hridoy as captain marks a significant milestone in the young batter’s international career. One of Bangladesh’s most promising white-ball players in recent years, Hridoy will now have the responsibility of leading the national side in the absence of regular captain Litton Das.

Litton, along with senior pacer Taskin Ahmed, has been granted permission to miss the Zimbabwe series to fulfill commitments in the Lanka Premier League. The decision reflects the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s willingness to accommodate franchise commitments while also providing leadership opportunities to emerging players.

For Hridoy, the series offers a valuable opportunity to showcase his leadership credentials while continuing to establish himself as a key figure in Bangladesh’s white-ball setup.

Mosaddek Hossain Earns Recall After Impressive Form

The most notable inclusion in the squad is the return of experienced all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, who forced his way back into contention with strong performances in the recent ODI series against Australia.

Mosaddek scored 157 runs across three matches during the series, demonstrating both consistency and finishing ability. His performances convinced the selectors that he deserved another opportunity in the T20I format.

Explaining the decision, Bangladesh chief selector Habibul Bashar highlighted Mosaddek’s all-round capabilities.

“We picked Mosaddek as he is carrying good form with the bat while he can also be handy as an off-spinner,” Bashar told Cricbuzz.

Mosaddek’s versatility adds important balance to the Bangladesh squad, particularly in the middle order where his experience could prove valuable.

Yasir Ali Returns After Nearly Three Years

Another significant development is the return of Yasir Ali Chowdhury to Bangladesh’s T20I setup after a lengthy absence.

The hard-hitting batter last featured in the format during the Asian Games in October 2023 and has now been recalled primarily for his ability to accelerate the scoring rate during the latter stages of an innings.

According to Bashar, Bangladesh’s selectors specifically targeted a batter capable of providing explosive finishing power.

“As for Yasir Ali, we feel we need someone down the order who can clear the ropes at will,” Bashar explained.

The decision indicates Bangladesh’s continued efforts to strengthen their lower-middle-order firepower ahead of future global tournaments.

Saifuddin Back as Bangladesh Search for Balance

Fast-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin has also returned to the squad after missing Bangladesh’s home series against Australia.

His inclusion reflects the team’s strategic focus on finding the right balance between specialist bowlers and seam-bowling all-rounders.

“We want to go with two pacers and one pace-bowling all-rounder. We tried that combination against Australia, and we will try it again. So that’s where Saifuddin comes in,” Bashar said.

Saifuddin’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball could play an important role in Bangladesh’s plans as they seek greater flexibility in their T20 setup.

Shamim Hossain Rested After Lean Run

Meanwhile, aggressive batter Shamim Hossain has been omitted from the squad due to his prolonged poor form.

According to the selectors, the decision was taken to allow the left-hander time away from international cricket to rebuild his confidence.

“Shamim hasn’t been scoring runs in his last nine or ten innings. We are giving him a break so that he can rediscover his form,” Bashar stated.

The move highlights Bangladesh’s willingness to rotate players and prioritize long-term development rather than persist with out-of-form performers.

Shanto’s Name Discussed

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was also considered during the selection discussions, especially after Litton’s absence created an opening at the top of the batting order.

However, the selectors ultimately decided against recalling him for this series.

“Shanto’s name was discussed but could not make it this time, but I am sure we will play a few more series before the next World Cup and will have the chance to see him as well,” Bashar revealed.

The comments suggest that Shanto remains part of Bangladesh’s long-term T20 plans despite not making the current squad.

Opportunity to Build Squad Depth

The Zimbabwe series arrives at an important stage for Bangladesh cricket. With several senior players unavailable and younger talents receiving opportunities, the three-match series offers a chance to evaluate combinations ahead of a busy international calendar.

The selectors’ emphasis on identifying finishers, pace-bowling all-rounders, and future leaders underlines Bangladesh’s efforts to build a stronger and more versatile T20 squad.

For Towhid Hridoy, in particular, the series represents a golden opportunity to prove himself not only as a batter but also as a potential leadership option for Bangladesh cricket in the years ahead.
